of course ther's nothing to stop any "beginner" from going out & purchasing climbing gear and then off they go.

what we see in this forum is a lot of discussion from quite reasonable people, well versed in the prefered way to get an introduction into climbing, but big deal.

this is all just hot air

people having to complete courses, reach a certain number of lead climbs (100?), or prove to another that you are "safe & competant"...i mean really...i hope it never come to this...it will be a sad day indeed.

What if you cant find a mentor? Does that mean you cant ever go climbing until you get one!

Are you all exponents of the idea of a climbing liscene perhaps and route police as well? In fact perhaps we should push for a bicycle license while we are at it, Pesky bikers on the road with no idea of traffik rules, no formal trianing or 2-teir mentor program.

regarding the previous posters comments on their liabilities taking necomers our climbing, i would say that any claim for negligence leading to liability would be possible, but each case has to judged on it merits. negilgence is negligence regardles if you are a paid guide or not, it is the level of responsibility and expectation which differs.

i certaily wouldnt stop taking friends out climbing because of the possibility of leagal action at a later date...hell who would you then climb with??
you would end up soloing then probably fall on someone who would then go after your estate!
