I'm the same and I put it down to "Fear of exposure" ie what you can't see, won't hurt you. Even some climbing positions scare me like when you stepping between two walls in a corner. When climbing on a single wall, you're focussed on what's in front of you and you don't look elsewhere.I was always comfortable abseiling inside caves as you couldn't see the bottom.

Anyway, my suggestion for overcoming the fear of abseiling is to slowly build up the heights. Just start with a 2 metre (or less) abseil, get used to going over the edge and then slowly increase the height as you build your confidence.Unstanding your equipment and how the anchors are set will also build your confidence.
