I hate walking off in bare feet or rock shoes, and always give my shoes to my belayer to bring up to the top for me. It's best to be considerate and leave the leather scarpas at home and use light runners though.
On the odd occasion where I've had to carry my own shoes, they seem to hang nicely from the bottom of a camelbak. Much better distribution than chucking them on the back of a harness. Perhaps because i'm a mtn biker I have 4 camelbaks of different sizes, but generally a larger one is best, to carry a tempest/mentz sized guide, some rich tea biscuits and a hammock.
