Mike, firstly (by way of a sort of vested interest) I was involved in the very early stages of planning for this guide when I was on the VCC committee so I got a glimpse of what was going to be required.
Secondly, yes it is "expensive", but when you consider that the majority of people such as you and me don't directly contribute to its production effort (other than by purchasing the end product) despite calls to do so, a huge amount of work is done by a dedicated few who put in hundreds of hours of work for very little (and in most cases for free), its probably worth twice that amount.
The whole area hasn't been updated for a long time (many years), there are many new routes and access descriptions to be verified, it is spread out and complex to describe, nobody involved wanted the old guide just reprinted without most of the information being checked for accuracy, and most importantly it is being sold into a very small, and lets face it "specialist" market which makes it nearly impossible to make it a viable commercial proposition. The fact that it is happening at all is a brilliant effort. |
