It seems to me that a fall that is softer on gear, rope and climber, and most importantly doesn't slam the climber into the wall on an overhanging route is always to be preferred. As a basic proposition there can't be much doubt about that. And given that a dynamic/jumping belay will achieve this, the real question is 'when would you *not* use a dynamic belay?' This can only be when the extra distance used for deceleration could have some adverse consequences (like hitting the ground). I'm particularly aware of this, as i weigh about 95kg. This means I always get nice soft belays from 'stickmen', and have to be pretty conscious of it when belaying. J
