I think most people would 'tick' Everest off their list as long they get to stand on top. This is because Mountain Climbing and Sport Climbing (and Aid climbing and all other types for that matter) are not the same thing.

Its far from ridiculous. That's like saying 'this red, green, blue, white, yellow, orange distinction is ridiculous - as long as you are happy with the colour of your car you're on the right track.' It is a description. If you don't give it some meaning then it is useless to describe anything.
