Personaly I give it my all first go. If it to hard then I may play on it a bit to work crux and clips.

Who said It had to be fast and efficient. If i dont get the route first go then I work it a little to remember to moves and go try something else. I find it far more rewarding to come back a few weeks later and send it.
In fact It can be very frustrating and dissapointing to work a route in the way outlined by BadBrad if you dont send the route.

I like to have a project out there to return to that is just to hard for me as it helps keep me motivated and I can work the moves on my woodie.

I can se the advantages of the lookfirst, work it, then send it, but I choose enjoyment ahead of speed or increaseing my grades.
