The 'group' that he worked for are still selling the unlocking tool and the subsequent versions are all still out there. I can understand why Adobe don't like what they have done!

While its theoretically true that you can encrypt a product so that it can't be un-encrypted, the moment you need that product to be easily un-encrypted and available to the public, it becomes vulnerable to unlocking tools. The same way a commercial DVD is 'encrypted' (very basically) it needs your player in your loungeroom to be able to read it and therefore it has to have a security feature that can be unlocked on the fly by your machine.

Some of the e-book software uses a system whereby you allow the ID of your computer to be sent to the company when you download or install them, then when you open that file, they check:
1) have you paid for it
2) are you running it on the same computer
3) (in some cases) how many times have you opened it

if all these details match - they send an unlock key string to the software and it opens.
