Yes, at UNSW we are conducting some of this type of tourism policy research ...in places like Nepal, there are instances where Sherpa families/individuals tend to compromise basic school education for their young so they pursue work in the lucrative porter business - however, their long-term welfare/alternative work oppotunities are often not that well looked after once accidents happen or they can no longer work as porters. Sure, the tourist Western dollar does stimulate the economic circumstances in many third world destinations but it's often not that well balanced with effective management of the cultural/social/environmental impacts that this form of tourism brings - they may not even be recognised/known. There are no easy answers, it's a complex issue involving other factors such as politics as well. Finding a balance for a sustainable future is the key, which is a very complicated concept on the ground.
