"Side" and "front" are all relative. A while back I did read a description of the tests (can't find it now) and the tests were essentially still based on the assumption of rockfall from "above". I'm sure there was no mention of protection during falls, eg a side impact from a swinging traverse fall. And my high riding old style eidelrid has a monster gap at the back of the head, a perfect fit for a rock dislodged by someone waiting at the anchor to sneak through and clong me if I look down while abseiling. Tho some of the newer one's seem better. Might be very hard to design something useable with that protection,but if it was easy I'd go for it.
