Not that I was a fan of the National Union of Students, but they have been affective occasionally at preventing governments (both State and Federal) in preventing fee increases, getting discounts on government services, tax breaks etc. So while you may be happier not paying it, you may end up paying a whole heap more without student representation. Similar comments can be made about the Students Unions on an individual campus.
