I'm not sure that there can ever really be a cap on how high grades can go, because of their subjective nature. If a grade could be determined by just measuring the angle, space between holds, size of holds, and so on, you could say that a certain grade is impossible. But really its all subjective. The way it seems to work is that when someone climbs something harder than anyone has done before, then they give it the next grade (subject of course to debate and possibly ridicule by all and sundry who havn't even seen the route;)
This process would seem to allow infinite grade increases, although the objective difference between hold spacing etc must get smaller and smaller.

Course the clipping thing makes it more interesting, but I don't think it necessarily limits grade increases - just what routes its possible to climb. maybe top-roping is the way of the future?!?
