i haven't looked into the logistics of getting up there just yet, i can't imagine it would be that difficult tho. more looking into the actual feasibilty of a trip up there. so far i've found a few helpful site even with topos! I'd be interested if anyone knows of the current status of the requirement for permits etc? also if any others are interested in climbing up there perhaps? heres the sites i uncovered:

I remember reading a mag at the gym that had an article on climbing in Laos. Climbing maybe? I'll check next time I'm in and note details for you, unless someone else finds it first...

Further to this, does anyone know if the routes in vietnam's halong bay are bolted as yet?

there has been one expedition that i know of to bolt routes in halong bay- back in '97 some americans did a while there and think thewy put up about 25 lines. i was there for a month in 2002/2003 and didnt see any evidence of previous climbing but it really is quite impossible to describe how much awesome potential there is, we just bouldered a bit but im planning on going back one day to do some routes. if yu have the opportunnity to go there and dont mind the work of putting up your own routes then i strongly recommend it. i think there should be some kind of management arrangement made with the locals before the drill are fired up though

There's an article on the place in Rock and Ice #137 (Oct 04), and yeah, it appears so (to some extent). There might be some good deepwater soloing there too.

Halong Bay would have about 1000 times the potential of Vang Vieng. Go for it
