Bush Camping in the Grampians/Gariwerd

For many climbers heading to the Grampians, dispersed camping/bush camping is their preferred choice. As always, it pays to be informed. There are areas you can’t disperse camp and in the places where you can, there are rules and regulations.

The more recent Grampians visitor guide clearly shows the areas where bush camping is not allowed. Check this out and know where you can go. Read the rules – most importantly around campfires as we start coming into cooler weather.

Dispersed or bush camping is not permitted inside the hatched areas displayed on the park map.
While bush camping, remember Campfires are not permitted –fuel stoves only
Only camp in previously cleared areas
Leave no trace of your visit –take all rubbish home with you
Camp at least 25m from waterways and 1km from campgrounds.

*Campfires are only allowed in the park in the official metal ring fireplaces

So I'll probably be heading down to the Gramps and Araps over Easter to join the multitudes. I have a van and am planning to free camp in the Gramps. Don't worry, I'll be taking the map showing where free camping is allowed - I'm not intending on camping where I shouldn't.

I'm looking for good out of the way spots to roll up with my van that aren't just the side of a dirt road. Preferably out of sight of randoms who are just happening to go by during the night. I don't need a toilet (not that free camping is allowed near any toilets) or fire place or anything in particular. Just a quiet out of the way spot.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I wasn't proposing driving off road. I was hoping for out of the way carparks or pull outs on quiet roads.

Borough Huts campground was closed this morning. Was open when I drove past yesterday.
Sign said the closures were on "under the direction of the Chief Health Officer" . Closed until further notice.

Gfdonc may have a perfectly good reason for being out and about. The other posts are 12 months old.

Indeed.

Victoria appears to have closed all campgrounds and caravan parks. See dhss.vic.gov.au website and yes it is at the direction of the Chief Health Officer. Also PV site wont accept bookings. NSW has closed national park campgrounds.

Vic also appears to have a ban on outdoor sport gatherings of 2 or more (unless of same residence). So i still cant go out for a crank with you Mr Zoo. Sorry about that (chief)! But i can climb with my kids. For now. Watch for that loophole. "Missed it by that much".

Parks closed everything on the 25th. They just might not have had signs up yet.

When I first read their directive on the 25th the opening paragraph was:

As directed by the Chief Health Officer all campsites, camping grounds and caravan parks will be closed from midnight tonight.

People can continue to live on a closed caravan park or camping ground if it is registered as their primary place of residence or if they are staying in caravan parks as interim accommodation where their primary residence is not available.

It may have changed as the page has been updated since: http://www.parks.vic.gov.au/get-into-nature/safety-in-nature/covid-19-update

That page is linked at least twice from the front page of the Parks website, along with posts on social media, etc. Currently the front page has a box on the right that says:

As directed by the Chief Health Officer all campsites, camping grounds and caravan parks are closed as of midnight Wednesday 25 March 2020.

Forests put out a similar release on the same day.

GFDonc has a house in Halls Gap, and is very well isolated with Mrs Donc and the dog.
More so than if we'd stayed in Melbourne.
Some solo explorations delayed by the rain today (which just started).

New management plan has significant changes to camping. Bush camping is no longer allowed.

I’d be less cynical if they hadn’t just opened the peaks trail at $40 a night or whatever it is.
