Barrenjoey Work Bee Report & Post Fires Photos 4-Nov-2013 At 10:45:05 PM Superstu

We have 30 volunteers along at the Barrenjoey Working Bee last weekend, and judging by the round-the-circle intro's in the morning most were rock climbers plus a number of locals who are getting interested in helping look after the park. Great to see a number from the Sydney Rockies and also a strong team from UNSW. A huge thankyou to everyone who turned up.

Smoke from fires up the coast gave us an eerie start to the morning.

We walked up smuggler's track and checked out the aftermath of the fires...

Xanthorrhoea and Lomandra are the first to spring back...

We were assured by rangers Rachael and Judy that the other natives will start to re-appear soon. The banksias have all released their hardy seed pods (they need a real good fire to release them, and they got one!).

The view from the lighthouse:

The lighthouse was saved after an apparently epic battle. The roof actually caught fire at one stage and Ranger Rachael told how they punched holes in the ceiling in some of the rooms to get water up into the roof to save the building. Imagine how intense it would be to be up there at the lighthouse, surrounded by raging fire, waiting for the next chopper run with water. Being a ranger ain't an easy job!

Looking out to the northern head and the path to the Palm Beach crag.

Time to get to work!

We collected rubbish that has appeared now that the vegetation is gone, and removed asparagus fern shoots and the remaining skerics of lantana trying to come back.

Never too young to help out!

Morning tea at the lighthouse. Most people made the trek up the tower for the views and check out all the cool little things in the museum.
