I'm not sure what particular items were taken, and I don't think any of the dodgy characters were seen. They could be locals or just some opportunists. Zarb's points are good though. Macquarie Pass is another common place for these break-ins, and the technique of leaving nothing of value in the car, with the windows open, seems to work really well.
