Here's a thought:

When first promoted, way back in 1990, "Clean Up Australia Day" had a 'warm and fuzzy' feeling but if the programme had been truly effective then by now we ideally should have no need for its continuance.

Sadly, what takes place nowadays is a bit like wiping a baby's bottom -- You get a nice result for a brief period, but shit happens! And continues to happen!

Here in Sydney, I've seen people out on Clean Up Australia Day, collecting and bagging massive amounts of rubbish along the Cooks River (beside the Bike Path) and then two weeks later I've seen mountains of crap back there again.

There's a crying need to stop rubbish being casually discarded into the environment at the source. Stop, or educate, or fine the people who cause this problem rather than repeatedly (for ever and ever?) cleaning-up after them!
