I'm the same. I also find using the belay loop means the device has too much freedom to move, making belaying less efficient as the device has to move into position before any rope passes through.

In terms of orientation, belaying seems smoother if the device is naturally sitting with the dead end of the rope aligned towards the controlling hand.
