True, but they didn't die from eating polluted shellfish ;-)

I suspect that the current day descendants of the "original inhabitants" actually do see the kitchen middens for what they are, or were, and that is rubbish heaps.

But their presence, along with the concomitant carbon-dating material, allows us now to gain some understanding of those people's lifestyle and to hazard a guess at how long the area was occupied prior to European arrival.

Archaeologists and Pre-historians will tell you that all midden sites are important, but clearly from looking at where excavation studies have been performed to date some areas/middens are obviously considered to be potentially more "productive".

It shouldn't be too hard though for us to minimise our disturbance of the midden deposits without therefore needing the areas to be closed to bouldering activity as a protective or cautionary measure.
