I have thought for a long time that indoors should have its own (simplified) system. Let's face it, there isn't much comparison between rock and plastic anyway. So rather than have people think they can climb, or worse still, lead; '20' outdoors because they have done it indoors. Then jump on say 'Little Thor' and die. Let them think they can do an 'F' route, or a 'D' route (using say A-J for 10 'grades') and let them work it out outside by starting again.
It would also reduce the arguments because the grades would be broader, the routesetters would have an easier time putting an 'accurate' grade on their routes, and there would be more cross gym consistency. All because the system just wouldn't be 'that accurate'.
