For the maps in the guides that I've done over the past decade or so, I've found a map that covers the area I want, scan it in, load it into CorelDraw, open a new layer and trace it in using a graphics tablet rather that using a mouse (too much RSI involved). Using layers means that the map can sit on one layer, roads on another layer, tracks on another layer and text on yet another layer. When the time comes to export it into the publishing software you can delete the map layer, which makes the file smaller. You can also make the map layer "non-printable" by ticking a box. I used Corel because it was cheaper than any Adobe product. |
