Having just come back from a (non-climbing) trip to Spain and Portugal all I can say is that their efforts at re-newables make Australia look like it is sitting on its collective hands. After a few train trips (electric trains that reached speeds of 300kph) we stopped saying "look, there's another wind farm" or "look, there's another Solar PV array". When we caught a bus out of Seville to Lisbon we went past a Solar Thermal array where there air seemed to glow around the collecting tower. Catching a plane out of Lisbon towards London and the size of the wind farms we saw was enormous. A single farm that we saw was probably bigger than all the farms in Victoria combined. All this technology that is being 'debated' in Oz is in existence overseas, it has been in existence for years and it has been 'proven' for years. It is something that I will have to look further into i.e. what percentage of their power is produced by re-newables, how many wind turbines are there, how much is produced by PV and how much by Solar Thermal. But still, that's just my quest and it's currently quite low on my "to do" list.
