13-Jan-2018 Logan Barber does Aussie new hardest trad crack.
Australian climber Logan Barber has established the hardest pure crack climb in Australia, Japanese Deep Freeze (31/5.13d), at Mt. Buffalo, Victoria.

The short, power-endurance line, which has remained an open project since the 1990s, involves a shallow, flaring 0.75 granite crack on overhanging terrain and challenging gear placements.

After their successful ascents of Shark Hunt, Barber and Vertrees shifted their attention to Japanese ... [ More ]

End of the Month @ Araps/Djurite - February
Location: Mount Arapiles
Leader: Rhys Boyar
Details: Mt Arapilesin summer? Arapiles in late February can provide some excellent climbing. Enjoy the cool and shady gullies or the routes on the left side of Central Gully. Get up (reasonably) early and enjoy the sun's rays on the nearby classicsand well-worn trade routes in the Organ Pipes. Maybe explore some new areas. All those famous walls and prominent buttresses of Arapiles have shady gullies nearby! These gullies sometimes have cool breezes emanating from the 'bowels of Araps'. We will be camping in The Pines, close to the action. There is no better rock to fondle than the hard quartzite of Arapiles, so contact your Trip Leader, Rhys Boyar, to register your interest. These EOM@Araps/Djurite trips are intended for all levels of climbers, however Beginner spaces will be limited by the number of experienced leaders who come along. It is recommended that Beginners contact the Trip Leader as soon as possible. All intending participants must contact the trip leader prior to the trip. Please send through some details about your experience and climbing gear and hopefully we'll see you there.   Photos: Trip Leader Rhys Boyar and the Organ Pipes at sunrise. [ More ]
16/03/2019Cape Woolamai Adventure Climbing
Location: Cape Woolamai Phillip Island
Leader: Peter Upton
Details: Is there a better crag for adventure climbing in Victoria, let alone so close to Melbourne? Don't you want to be looking out to the horizon, sitting proudly 100 metres above the crashing surf, belayed to a mutton bird, a clump of sea grass and a passing tourist ("ere ya go mate, just hang on to this for a few minutes will ya?"). An experience not to be missed! This daytrip is for experienced climbers with the skills and aptitude to climb in all conditions. Everything is possible, even in early Autumn.Rain, more rain, wind, lots of wind and absolutely no shortage of exposure or dubious rock. A great day out and about. The possibilities include multi-pitch climbing on the main cliff, with belay views to savour. Or you can choose to do the classic pinnacle traverse and stay closer to the ground/sea! Intending participants need to contact the Trip Leader, Peter Upton, prior to trip. Be prepared to give Peter details of your experience and skills. This trip is not suitable for Beginners. It is for experienced intermediate and advanced climbers only.   Photos: Trip Leader Peter Upton and the Second and Third Pinnacles from the all time classic 'Pinnacle Travere'. These images were taken on the summer reconnaissance trip this year!   [ More ]

Winter Camp 2019 - Mt Feathertop
Location: Mt Feathertop
Leader: Philipp Hammes
Details: This year Game of Thrones will be back and we'll be back at Mt Feathertop. Together with the New Zealand Alpine Club we'll rock the Backcountry Event you really don't want to miss! Youve done some rock-climbing and want to step it up? Youre thinking about doing a Technical Mountaineering Course? You want to climb the Himalayas? You're a seasoned mountaineer and just want to enjoy a great weekend in the snow? This is EXACTLY the right trip for you. Hopefully you can join us hiking up Bungalow Spur, or across the Razorback (whatever ticks your fancy), and meet at Federation Hut for a fluffy snow camp. There you have the choice between: Just enjoying winter wonderland and cooking some snow OR Joining the mountaineers and practising self-arrest, building a Swiss pulley system and doing other weird things. For this option youll need an ice-axe, crampons and a climbing helmet at a bare minimum. If you havent attended a previous VCC Mountaineering trip or Winter Camp, there will be a mandatory mid-week briefing in Melbourne prior to the trip. This trip is suitable for all levels of experience, with limited spaces for beginners. The trip leaders - Anna, Matt, Petey and Philipp - have done all kinds of crazy stuff and some of them are also Alpine SAR Victoria members. You will be in safe hands. If you're new to snow-camping, please get in touch with us. There are a lot of things to consider which we will address at the briefing, however it doesn't hurt to get a heads-up on the gear requirements. More details regarding theMountaineering Season 2019 will be released once were done with the planning. Feel free to email us any questions in the meantime Winter is coming. DAH DA DUH DA DAH DUH DA DA DA (dadadadadadadadadadadadaada) To secure your place self-register via this web-form: Cheers Anna, Matt, Petey and Philipp [ More ]
