A great weekend, there was too much to see. A huge thanks to the organisers and volunteers who made it all happen. Next time I'll be better organised and see more (and go in the Zimmer class in the bouldering comp)

Thanks for the "Breaking Bad" Demo.. absolute festival highlight for me.

Much of the credit for the Breaking Bad demo must go to Richard Delaney of the Rope Test Lab (see their FB page) who had some great tests planned, and had all sorts of funky gear and load cells to make testing quick and accurate.

Commiserations to Monty who bought along the worst, most corroded chain and shackle, only to find that the biner broke first (21kN?)

Yeh I thought Natasha and Gemma did a great job of getting it all together and having it run smoothly. A huge effort to wrangle all those things together nowadays and they deserve a big applause for their effort.

It was hard to get to see everything and still talk to everybody and eat and everything else all at the same time, but that's probably a good thing. I hope everyone enjoyed it and turns up again next time.

At least Monty got it the safe way around, rather than having the shiny new hardware shop chain snap at something small!

lots of fun for the Sunday we were there.

Thanks organisers and participants.

Thanks to everyone behind the scenes; I hope it worked financially and that a climbing festival continues at less than 7 year intervals.
Thanks Mikl and Richard for excellent hands-on summary show of all the work you have done in recent years. Always sobering to see things being broken. [TLDR climber summary = replace all 'software' slings/quickdraws etc every few years even if not left out in the sun...]
I preferred the lead climbing competitions of old, but I suppose that they are slower to run and cost more. But it seems harder to set bouldering problems with a good dispersion of finalists?

Great to hear people enjoyed the festival, the positive feedback makes all the hard work worthwhile.

We would have loved to built a lead climbing wall but we really needed an all weather solution. Also with the location of the site, any structure would have had to be engineered to endure a really high wind loading. The route-setters did a great job considering there were time limitations with the venue as to how long they could work into the night.

We are putting together a survey soon and would love to hear lots of feedback, particularly what worked and what could be improved upon.

We will post some details a bit later as to when the next one will be and a link to a survey.

Thanks!

I too add my thanks to not only the organisers, but also the volunteers who made this event happen.

I attended all three days and was spoilt for choice on each of them.
When I bought my early bird ticket, my old-fartedness thought, blerrie heck, expensive! ... but after having attended, I reckon it was well worth the $ I spent!

There were too many highlights for any one in particular to stand out, but off the top of my memory, I mostly enjoyed the presentations by the guest speakers, the John Ewbank eulogy, and the 'Is Climbing Sexy?' debate.

The food vendors were also good (particularly the Tibetan curries!), and the shiny-stuff being flogged by sponsors was an interesting insight into how much the climbing game has changed over my lifetime.

Thanks Natasha, Gemma, and 'Co', for an incredible event, and I look forward to the next one.

Post edit:
~> In hindsight;
Probably the funniest moment (for me), of the festival was Andy Kirkpatrick's video footage of him tossing his haulbag with parachute (pilot-shute only?), attached, off the north face of the Eiger after a successful ascent... It effectively acted like a stabilised-bomb for an incredible free-fall to the base, where it exploded almost out of sight due being so far below...

The most poignant film for me was The Resounding Silence, featuring climbing and hang-gliding in Greenland's vast interior.

Yeh it was a good festy and thanks for putting it on.
I will be at the next one again for sure.

I found the bouldering championship a bit whimsy.
What was with the girl who came third at the presentation of awards. She looked like she'd lost a hundred dollar note and only found a fiver? When she left the stage she looked like she was gonna keel over?
Bouldering can't be that hard at third place given the condition of the 1st an 2nd placegetters.

Was also amusing that the girl from Singapore won a superwarm sleeping bag for her efforts.
She musta thought that would be useful back home eh?
Who said sandbagging was only for tradsters?

Is the ACF always held in the Blue Mountains, or does it alternate between different locations? I'm wondering about it for next year's calendar...

It has always been held in the Blue Mountains (am I dreaming in thinking there was a much smaller event at Nati about 20 years ago?).

The previous festival was held 7 years ago - so don't hold your breath for the next one happening soon!

The international climbing festival at Nati was about 30 years ago - I thought it was 86 but Kim had gone overseas by that time. Maybe 84 - I think I've still got an old T-shirt somewhere.

Careful Kman, or M9 will want it for the museum collection.

You are older than I thought if you remember that.
I'd bet money that you are only citing something you read or heard.

He'd have to be desperate. Found the shirt and it was 86. I'll post a photo later.

I was born in 1979. My parents are now pulling out all my old toys, blankets and even baby clothes for my kids.
Kieran's clearly a hoarder just like they are...

Ah, OK; I assumed it was an annual thing. I'd be quite interested to see if there's another one, especially if it's in Victoria.

I think that would be extremely unlikely.

There is Nati Fringe and Goatfest Film Fest every year in Natimuk, Victoria. And you can hear Simey talk for free most nights...
