A bit of strife / tension / opposing viewpoints is good, its part of what keeps a forum interesting. Too much, and it degenerates into a platform for personal self-aggrandisement, ad hominem attacks and the worst kind of childhood bullying and poor behaviour, with very little content of real interest.

I think a lot of the most valuable potential contributors are put off by the personal attacks and content-free drivel that some people indulge in.

How to improve it? I think more hands-on moderation would go a long way, with a particular focus on two areas:

1) Muzzle the worst of the bullying and ad-hominem attacks. I can't say for sure how many people have left this site or don't contribute anymore because of say ODH's gratuitous insults and aggressive behaviour. He may be a valued contributor in some ways, but he is probably the biggest single cause for people leaving the site. I've chosen to hide his comments so I'm immune from the worst of his comments, but its not an ideal solution as it also blanks his better contributions while also making some threads less intelligible. Reign him in or kick him off - along with others who indulge in bullying & personal attacks. This migh retain or bring back some people with a valuable contribution to climbing content and sense of community.
2) Nip general bull$%^& in the bud. Macca's spamming of the entire forum with his war with Neil is beyond tedious. I've gone beyond any interest as to the rights and wrongs of the particular situation - why does he feel entitled to infect the entire Chockstone with his grievance, and why are the moderators allowing it?

Those who thrive on conflict, enjoy winding others up, and small boys who enjoy squashing ants will bemoan increased moderation - the rest of us might get on and post more climbing related content.

You know, the approval of others isn't the most important thing in my life, but sometimes it's nice to hear that one's efforts are appreciated. Thanks a lot, technogeek, you've just brightened my day a little.

More talk about rock climbing?

The stuff about Kaputar is interesting & the Wolgan Valley TR really inspired me to finally get out there... so I'm satisfied.

I have, however, found myself on UKClimbing a lot more lately, not sure if it's that they're more civil or just the quantity of decent topics (obviously a larger membership base too)

I reckon more TR's and people just being stoked on climbing and not as focused on the 'us v them' mentality. If there are wrongs committed then go talk to the "wrong-doer" and nut it out.

Edit: this is not meant to be passive aggressive but pointing out that TRs are community generated, so if someone wants to see more TRs then they should write them.

I'd like to write a trip report but have a couple of problems:
I don't go climbing enough.
I don't do exciting or different climbing (although I always enjoy it)
I find posting the photos difficult (If there are any)
I have featured in a couple of mikl's reports and he seems to do a much better job.

Other than that, I'm all for it!

I've posted TRs from Aus, Thailand, Japan and USA. Mostly bumbly grade stuff, but that's what I climb.

I'd love to read more about Macca's climbing exploits, as I think he does some really bold trad stuff which is out of my league, but interesting. Neil seems to have gone quiet, but has always been a huge contributor to the site. I'd love to read more climbing content from any of you. I'll keep contributing what I can.

I tried to post it here but it would not let me for some reason, so instead I have posted it as a separate thread. Not exactly 'bold' but hopefully interesting. . . .
It also ties in a little with contemporary events being discussed around here currently . . .

Big G - any TR is a good TR... I don't go climbing as much as I'd like, and my climbing certainly isn't cutting edge... but I've had enough positive feedback to know that there are plenty of people who like to read about easy grade climbing too.

Photos are great, if you have them, and really not difficult to post. Below every post you make is a little help link "Adding Pictures" which describes the process. But in short, the best way to do it is to upload your photos to the photo-hosting site of your choice (I use Photobucket), copy the URL of the uploaded photo, and paste it in your post using the format "< img src="yoururlhere.jpg" >" without the spaces. Takes a bit of fiddling to get it all right the first time, but is really quite straightforward.

That said its difficult to compete with Mikl's TRs, but think he will have his hands full for a while :-)
