Desperately seeking twist lock biner

I am seeking a twist lock biner where the locking mechanism does not automatically close.

Obviously the gate would open and close, but you would have to twist the locking mechanism to either the open or closed position, as desired.

I asked this question some time ago, and someone out there new of one, but I can't remember the name or find the post in the search function.

Some of you might recall one that Mammut brought out some time ago, then there was one brought out by BD, but it got recalled. Petzl used to do one that has a ball lock, but it seems as thought they no longer produce it.

Ideas anyone?

The Rock Exotica Orca carabiners might suit what you are after (they are still available too).

They can be set up to be in a closed, but unlocked, position. Then once the gate is fully opened again, the next time that it closes it will go to the locked position.

Hard to tell from the photo, plus I've not seen those ones in real life, but if they do stay in the unlocked position when you let go of them, and you don't want them, come up with a price and we'll talk turkey (gobble gobble)

ES,

I answered this for you once before suggesting the manual lock mechanism from Rock Exotica. It may have been superseded by the ORCA, but they may make both still.

Otherwise, I'd be surprised if you can't find some Petzl ball lockers somewhere. Perhaps NOS in some store.

But why so particular?

Have you considered the BD magnetron mechanism? They seemed very easy to operate when I played with them.

Yes you did and thanks again. I got side tracked by some pesky injuries for a while, but am back now, baddera than ever.

I need the binders for a very specific purpose, which involves climbing, but if need to hang on with one hand whilst setting a report anchor and clipping in with the other.

I've got 2 of the petlz ball locks which are fine for the job, but they don't make them any more. The last time I was looking the gear shops told me no such thing existed, which is a little frustrating when I know they do.

I'll have a look at the BDs.

I was skeptical of BD Magnatrons in principle - but after recently using a mates they seem great to operate single handily. Check them out.

They do still make the Ball Lock:

but this doesn't sound like what you're describing, since they work like a normal autolocker.

I think you may have the Petzl Spin Ball which they no longer make?

Might have to try 2nd hand? Or a shop with old stock lying around?

It's not about operating them single handed, it's about having them function like a snap link biner in the open position, then being able to lock it closed.

Imagine this, you're climbing. You are holding on with 1 hand, and you need to use the other hand to hold the locking biner in the open position due to the auto lock mechanism being engaged when it closes. I don't then have a third hand to put the rope in with.

A screw gate works like this, but takes a little bit of time (admittedly only a few seconds) to lock closed. Those few seconds are critical to the specific use I have.

Also, imagine having to undo and do up a screw gate several hundred times in a day. I guarantee you it gets pretty boring.

I haven't tried it but I reckon it wouldn't be hard to clip a rope into a Magnatron one handed. Index and thumb to open the gate whilst rope lies on other fingers.

Yeah, the yellow bit can spin 360 degrees. They're not fantastic, but I still use them.

The twin gate one might suit the purpose. Do the gear shops in Melbourne stock them?

and no they will not stay in the unlocked/open position....they will snap back closed and locked.
