Grampians road and campground closures
12:12:49 PM
Hi all,

Thanks to all the unseasonal weather we've had lately, there's some road and track closures in the Grampians that will affect your xmas weekend trips. Refer here:

I've just spoken to Parks Vic about the following things:

Buandik Campground
Closed today due to fallen tree. Not due to open in time for xmas. Also the walkin to the Billimina shelter is closed due to a landslide. It is considered the Gallery walkin from this side of the hill is also closed since access is through the now closed campground, footbridge etc. The Goat track to Millenium Caves is also closed.

MULINE and Red Rock Road
It is possible to get here, but not via the following route: Halls Gap > Mount Victory Road > Glenelg River Road > Lodge Road > Red Rock Road. You CAN however get there via the following route: Hallps Gap > Mount Victory Road > Rose Creek Road (which is further along than Glenelg River Road) > Right turn into Lodge Road > Left turn into Red Rock Road. Alternatively, approach from the Henty Highway (eg via Billwing Rd to Red Rock Rd).

At this stage Stapylton Campground is open for business.

I did not ask about any other campgrounds. For specifics, ring Parks Vic Halls Gap on (03) 5361 4000. Please post any info you gather on this thread to save the Parks Vic staff answering the same question over and over again to multiple different callers.

Cheers - happy holidays

ps, on account of the increasing frequency of Buandik Campground closures, maybe it's time to create an alternative approach track to the Gallery from the other side of the hill??

You can actually walk in via The Tower. It's a little flatter and takes a little more time. Its only 10 minutes of bush-bashing from The Tower to the Gallery. Navigation is a bit tricky since you are deep in undergrowth and the Gallery isn't very obvious since its hidden behind one of the many grey blobs on the summit. I've done this several times.

We were the last climbers up there when they closed the Billimina track. We had draws on the routes so the ranger let us up to claim them before closing it right off. Info on the other walk in route may be a good idea if this does happen again, because if the ranger wasn't so friendly in our case, he may have told us to get nicked and then - not knowing bout the other track - wouldve had to annoy parks by intruding to get our draws.

So, is there info about the alternate approach easily available? I admit, as a former Gamps local I didn't actually know about it......... I think I could get there from the Tower easy enough, but I ask for the sake of others

I'm also super keen to hear any details available on the alternate approach. Buandik gets closed often :-( . On this occasion it is because a tree has fallen over, so now the tree people have to come and evaluate it. I don't get this - can anyone enlighten me as to what there is to evaluate other than that it has indeed fallen down and requires chopping up into bits as firewood?

There us no actual track from the Tower to the Gallery. It's a 10 minute bushbash. Just get to the tower first then continue further on in the same general direction towards the buandik hill. Hit the cliffline then turn left and follow it to the gallery cave. Navigation could be difficult as it's thick vegetation and buandik hill isn't obvious. I'll post some gps cords later after present unwrapping time...

Thanks Neil you rock! Hope Santa is kind to you this year!

Buandik wasnt closed coz of a tree when we left. The track to the falls is blocked by a landslide from the rain apparently. When we went to retrieve our stuff, we couldnt go near it though, but thats what the ranger told us.

Cheers, Neil. That would be fantastic

Type these into your smart phone or gps to walk to The Gallery via The Tower. Probably take an hour or a bit less.

Tower GPS

The Gallery GPS

Access description to The Tower is here

Thanks Neil!

Billimina walking track still closed (due to landslide).

Goat track (road to Millenium) still closed.

Buandik campground still closed - several trees have fallen down - Parks Vic unable to indicate when the campground will reopen :-(
11:06:15 PM
Big deal! Just camp at stapylton and drive down.

Jac obviously enjoys the battle of wits with the kookaburras for her food.
12:58:19 PM
Regular walkin for Gallery also closed. Bush bash from Tower side required.
3:26:55 PM
The 'bush bash' is OK Jac - we did it to access The Tower from the Gallery years ago - when we didn't have Neil's access details for The Tower! But it takes a bit longer than Neil's 10 minute estimate - are you surprised?
Enjoy the Gallery Jac!

I'd imagine I'd take 90mins to get up that hill on an undefined track. That puts it in the Ceuse category. Think I'll wait for the normal track to reopen ;-)
5:41:08 PM
OT: 90 minutes walk in for Ceuse??? Half that unless you were taking a leisurely stroll?

For those of you that are unaware, Western Vic has been hit rather hard by flooding - the Grampians and surrounds included.

Be sure to check out the VicRoads & Parks Vic websites prior to attempting to head into the area. A few "highlights" to illustrate the magnitude of the damage are:

120m section of the Northern Grampians Road has "washed away".
Enormous boulders fell onto Mount Victory Road (Halls Gap)
Several towns evacuated, including Halls Gap and Dadswells Bridge.
The river through Horsham due to peak this week.

Here is a link to the VicRoads road closures report:

Here is a link to the Parks Vic closures:
(Note the entire Grampians National Park is currently closed. Normally this page just lists individual road and campground closures. You'll find many other parks are also closed - such as the You Yangs. Check before you leave home if planning a trip).

For facebook users, there are some pics of the carnage in Halls Gap here:!/photo.php?fbid=10150124957175407&set=a.10150124956940407.322140.679940406&pid=7731666&id=679940406

The affected towns are going to need a lot of support when they come out of this mess. Be sure to stop in and buy some local produce to help pump life back into the local businesses when they re-open. Icecream in Halls Gap yum...
