Simul-climb |
A practice often used in mountaineering, but sometimes applied to rock climbing over easier terrain. Both the Lead Climber and the Second climb at the same time, simultaneously. The leader places gear as per usual and the second keeps pace at the end of the rope below, removing the leader's placements. In this fashion it is possible to move much more quickly than climbing in pitches. However, the risk is much greater. If the second falls they will likely pull the leader off with them. For this reason the better climber generally takes the role of second. Sufficient gear needs to be between the two climbers to prevent injury. Both climbers need to be 100% confident they will not fall. This method is for very experienced climbers only. |
