I tied a cord on my handle to bulk it up for pushing with the palm.

I once had a nut tool I called Estuardo
And wherever I climbed it followed
It was quite fat cos it was made from scrap
But its length was too weeny making me unhappy.
So I ditched it for a tool more useful
And I am not at all remorseful
Though if it was recyclable I would've
But it couldn't so once again proved useless.

Ouch! Not so much blank verse as blanket verse - something you want to throw a blanket over so you can't see it anymore.

You palm bashers should really see how much easier it is when you use a 3 camalot as a hammer. Really, hitting a 5mm thick bit of metal with your hand with enough force to dislodge a nut set by Andrew seems only slightly less insane than hitting a 2mm thick bit.
My gear extraction techniques follow this order:
1. Lift it out.
2. wiggle and lift.
3. flick draw
4. sharp jab with nut tool held like you are stabbing someone
5. hold nut tool against piece in approiate spot and tap tool with the cam hammer. This is better than the large nut method, which is holding your 11 rock or the like in your hand like a rock and tapping the nut tool with it. Like you would do with a real rock except you are more likely to have a large nut or cam on you than a real rock at the time.
Then you have the old shitty bit that involves concurrent leverage and wiggling, hooking, double nut keys etc, but i'd say 99% of gear succumbs to the above list. Most gear doesn't get past step 3, except maybe when climbing with Andrew.
And TimP's photo reminds me of another pet nutkey hate - those dog leg stems! How are you supposed to get decent force and aim with that???

Geez Wendy, sounds like you need a magical Metolius nut tool that takes the gear out for you.
You just point it at the piece and say something from harry potter and the nuts just pop out.

Sadly, i've neither seen nor read harry potter so your nut key would be useless in my hands.

I have an old DMM one with a nice palm friendly blue plastic handle. No need to smash your camelot or drag up a big hex for. Whack with your palm as hard as you like no probs. I don't get why they all don't have these.

We should go for a climb sometime. ;-)

That's the bulky one I was bagging out earlier! You palm bashers are obviously all tougher than I am. But seriously, it hasn't damaged my cams at all - I have some extremely well used 20 year old camalots still going strong. And there's a simple matter of physics. Try bashing a nail in with your palm (you can cover it with a chunk of wood to save impaling yourself). Then compare that to a hammer. Or my improvised hammer substitutes. You just get a lot more force.

When you do read the books, substitute the word wang for wand, it's way funnier that way.

Ok, I'll try "peanut butter sandwiches" today. I am climbing with the only better welder than Andrew that I know, so it may be useful.

So...did ya smile to yourself and point ya magical nut tool at a piece and say "peanut butter sandwiches" at least once today?

I have a little 2 dollar hammer that would weigh less than a camalot for when I know some pieces will need encouragement. Actually saves destroying a stuck wire because you can give it one good whack in just the right spot instead of bashing and stabbing all over the place.
Haven't had any times when my DMM nut tool couldn't reach something, but yeah if a nut was really buried in a small crack I might have trouble.

Wendy - So you carry a 3camalot and a nut tool every time you second a climb? Jeez no wonder women are paid less than blokes.

Actually with my memory, i forget my nut tool half the time too ... and I don't know that you should be paid for your reading comprehension skills! I did say any available large cam or nut. A 1 camalot will suffice.
I remember the time when the 3 camalot was a big piece of gear that I debated carrying up routes. I sitll see people um and ah about 3 camalots. I am more likely to have it on me than my nutkey! The 4 camalot is my debatable large piece now.
And Dan, I didn't need to use the peanut butter sandwiches technique, Ken's gear was a lot less trouble than Andrew's bloody wire the other day.

Along those lines...
This is my favorite nut tool with optional funkness device attachment.
All the newfangled stuff talked about earlier in this thread are just pretenders!
... and here is another oldie, but a goody...
Anyone impaled themselves on a nut tool?
