how to make a rope protector

If you need to protect the whole length of a rope (which seems like a very unusal requirment given the robust nature of climbing ropes) maybe consider buying a specialised rope for your particular purpose, e.g. climbing gym ropes have a sheath proportion of up to 50%, some ropes are designed to repel welding slag, fire rescue have ropes designed to handle higher heat etc. One option could be contacting a rope manufacturer to find out what rope suits your spesific requirments.

I made one ages ago. I sowed some Velcro onto a length of seat belt webbing so the webbing could be wrapped around the rope.

Buddy don't stress about some of the replies. Can you give us a little more info around what you need the full length rope protector for? From the varied posts you can see that using a rope protector is a personal choice. I rarely use them any where but on the anchor while some people use them mid route, whatever your plan you're going to have a hard time getting the protector through the belay device..... If you want to use a full length protector than more power to you, personally I'm interested in knowing what you'll use it for.

P.S. I've also used tubular webbing. Cut the desired length and slide the rope on through... Not as burly as some protectors but worked well enough for my needs.

I go climbing down rock faces like mount piper near broadford. so far the garden hose sounds the best thing to use because the rock is so sharp like a knife and with out something that covers about the whole length of rope i get big nicks in the rope every time i go up and down

If you are climbing sharp rock maybe consider using double or twin ropes.

Climbing down rock faces eh? Does this mean you are a rappeler or absailer or something similar?

I'm confused. How do you plan to use your climbing rope once it is covered from one end to the other in garden hose? I don't get it. Are you going to be hanging off the end for an extended period of time or something?

how do you know i like gems ? and the use for the garden hose is cut it down the centre rap it around the rope where its realy sharp and tie it together with zip ties at both ends so it dosen't pop back out

If you're abseilling/TR self belay, cutting a hose and wrapping it around the rope once you've lowered past the sharp rock will work though if you're 'climbing' you'll need to figure out how to keep the rope protector in place over the sharp rock while you and the rope move up and down the climb.

Why not climb on the hose and leave the rope at home. The rope will stay in excellent condition that way. Or get one of Stugang's Rope logs, they make the rope last even longer
