While not wrong, Dr. Nick's explanation is rather misleading (and is probably why so many people find force confusing).

Mass (measured in kg) is an inherent property of objects. Miguel has a mass of 100kg. He maintains this mass while he's sitting on chockstone, when he's taking a huge whipper as his daisies fall to bits, when you boot him off the top of El Cap without a rope or parachute, and even when you shoot him into interstellar space. 100kg of mass is a fixed property of Miguel..........until he starts cutting back on the jelly donuts.

Miguel has no inherent force! The reason that people equate force with mass is that most of the time we deal with objects which are close to the surface of the earth and which aren't accelerating! If you stand Miguel quietly (zipties and valium) on a force measuring platform, it will measure 980 newtons of force (this is the force with which earth's gravity is pulling him downwards). However, if the meds wear off and he tears free of the restraints, then starts jumping up and down, the maximum force he exerts upon impact will be much higher than 980 newtons. If you shoot Miguel into space and measure his weight when he's 10 000km from earth, he will exert much less force than 980 newtons. Likewise, if you boot him and the force measuring platform off El Cap, you might be surprised to find that Miguel weighs nothing for the first 10 seconds.........after that he's kinda splattered into little pieces so it's difficult to scoop him up and measure anything properly.

The point is, be careful when you say "a 100g mars bar weighs 1N". This is only true if the mars bar is sitting quietly, and you're performing your measurement in a non-accelerating environment close to the surface of the earth!

This would be true for a static system with the climbers hanging (note, no net movement, the only force is weight) in free space. The system for a slackline is significantly more complicated, involving slackers falling (a dynamic process involving acceleration, and thus more force), and also needs to factor in the load multiplication across the span (see the tyrolean force calculator posted abvoe).

Funniest physics explanation ever!

Ever thought of a career teaching dense (pun intended) riggers basic physical concepts? I think you could even keep Cool Hand Lock entertained long enough for him to understand that the term "apparent weight" is nonsense.

Feeling left out? Envious that someone else had a witty post?

I can PM you an electronic butt kiss too if you like? Now how does that go...

Close, but not quite. You are correct that it is all about me.

Where you are wrong is that ever since ODH got all good Samaritan on us I don't find him half as funny. I want the old ODH back.

PM and email sent;)

I think it is a well rounded, entertaining and thoroughly accurate explanation. I shall utilise this when I lay the full weight of the law on the frenchies...

Superman, I may need a lift to Paris, and a pair of undies. Not sure the French are ready for this much nudity.

There R lots of naughts on the distance in kilometres between here and the moon, but I agree, they mean nothing. Did I tell you about the new routes I did there? Some of those crater rims are gnarly as, and make ice climbing on this planet seem like a bomb in the park for excitemant by comparison!

Ha! You are so not BP. BP would have said something like.

"I tied my 3mm shoe lace cord between two really loose micro flakes that kicked way back. But I thought, "Yeah go for it", so I did and I was awesome.

And you're all wrong, and I have spoken

The Ho"

...... or something like that

You have no idea Edwardoimposter - why is there a dot after yor name if you are the real deel.

My advice was four wot other peeps should do not wot I have dun.

Anyways, last time I cracked my head was a fell off the top of tiger wall (nude soloing Racey Boy) when I cracked my head - I caused an earthquake in japan.

Now thats wot I call One KillerBomber (1 KB) - shove that up your physics and gag on it.

There is no such thing as 2 KB.

Till next time you fall, an then UR up to 3KB?

Ha, you only cause an earthquake? The reel deel goes better than that an includes a tsunami! Been there an done that. My last decent one was in 2004.
Did I tell you that my last bouldering fall extended the san andreas fault? Don't believe me? Check out New Scientist recent publication for the vent holes bomb imposter!

Ok - serious question for all you physics and gear testing junkies.....Thought Experiment: I weigh (yeh right) 1 kg...and have a 1kn (forgive me rounding in your abuse) strength harness.

You must admit I live life on the edge...however conclusion is that if i sit very carefully in my harness very close to the earth I will not break it.

However, if i expect my harness to hold me (yes as always operating very close to the earth) after any kind of fall - I'm fuked, and most people get this, regardless of their education.

Long winded way of getting to my question, but how do tests of gear differ materially (in both experimental structure and results) from increasing weight in a static load situation from making a larger drop? I'm sure they are not going into space to do all this testing.

And finally, if the answer to my previous question is "not much", my final ultimate question is why the fuk confuse it and shouldn't we just rate things by kg static strength?

Yeh its lots of fun to take the piss out of people who haven't done (or cant remember) high school physics but I personally think it is forgivable for someone to think something "rated" to 100kn as being able to hold 100kg - a misunderstanding that could lead to disaster.

So, you either meant to type 100kg or 10N........or you're trying to trick people into thinking you typed one of those things

In fact, you'd have to accelerate at 100 x gravity to bust your harness

Yes, that would work fine too. Of course then you run the risk of people thinking that nothing they ever do could damage a 25 000kg biner. But really, it doesn't matter, you don't need to know most of that stuff to be a climber.

Anyway, all that is beside the point. I feel that highschool physics is under appreciated, and climbing is one place where it can be applied to work out semi useful trivia. I also get the massive shits when unimaginative teachers/chocky posters totally kook the explanation of force by only ever using static masses at the earths surface. Then they wonder why people struggle to differentiate force and mass, wankers! (I've thought of another really good example that people can relate to..........the garbage compactor in Star Wars!)

Can't really see how it'll lead to disaster, doing dodgy stuff will still be dodgy if you have the strength stamped in kg. Anyway, you're the fuchin' nerd who has the PhD in physics, ya geek!

Listen, shit for brains, how stupid are you? Why do you think the mods let me abuse retards such as yourself? I provide the odd bit of useful info, a dash of family friendly comedy, and in return am allowed a little room to express my feelings towards clowns like you.

You wanna be all edgy and shit, but look at the stats. I've had 26 people vote to get rid of me, 2 have abandoned the forum citing my heckling as the direct cause. What've you got? Nothing!

So now you're having a sook and you want the old me back, well too bad princess. Maybe I'm going to be nice from now on, and I won't let negative people like yourself bait me into returning to my old ways......c--k!

It sounds like there are a few people, not me of course;), that sometimes struggle with the whole physics gig as it relates to climbing stuff. It's just a thought but could we have the physics buffs create a simple post outlining a few examples of how physics applies, and then have it stickied? I'm thinking simple formula that apply to climbing and examples, i.e. Ollie's post about my tearing daisy, impact force on gear, ODH's newtons post....etc

I know there is always google but this sticky might make life easier for all new climbers and chockstoners alike...Would it be worthwhile?
