Are you a public servant?
Blerrie heck, where are my tax $ going?
I can understand your abhorrence of ropes as I regard bouldering as lightweight free-soloing, but this is now getting to me dn...

... In fact, I get over there occasionally, but I have neglected to ask you to be a partner for adventure climbing at Booroomba, for as you know I am not into bouldering per se, due no adventure involved for me in that pursuit.

Yep, (though don't know any pubes, and am not interested in your contacts), and have not met you, so I don't envy ODH(!), ... though this could change if you ever decide to enjoy roped climbing!

I happen to actually enjoy the psychological challenges that thin multi-day aid climbing present, and look forward to more of the same. You could do worse than try it sometime!

I suspect that W(ozza)* endy & I agree to disagree, as I like RP's and she less so.

I am in for the long haul, so you had better get used to my idiosyncrasies, or ignore (hide) the posts!
Heh, heh, heh.

Not sure how you interpreted that from my initial question.

I currently have no gear for trad routes whatsoever, with the exception of 8 stoppers.
I'll be moving to Melbourne with no contacts in the climbing scene at all and even if I do establish solid climbing partners with full racks I feel that four to five years is too long to bum off someone else's gear.

I was asking the question so that I could build my first rack with gear well suited to the area I'll climbing in for most of its life, so advice like nmonteith's was perfect.

So I don't no where you've got the impression that I was a gear whore looking for pedantic beta on whether a DMM cam or BD cam is superior in individual Grampian placements.

Fair enough about searching through olds threads and other internet resources, I probably should had been more thorough with my initial web searches before posting this.

But at the same time has this thread really had that much of a negative impact on you? Someone got some advice concerning their sport climbing trip to Europe, people have had a laugh and someone's even managed to bring up the aidclimbing vs. real climbing debate.

Since you mention University I would point out that most of the big Universities have climbing clubs that allow you to use gear at minimal cost and meet other climbers in similar circumstances to you. But if you do want to spend the money then getting it before you come here is a good idea as generally gear is cheaper overseas.

A "normal" trad is appropriate for most Victorian climbing. Double up on nuts and get small wires.

My rack is:
Double cams down to VERY small.
Double nuts down to VERY small.
8 tripple runners, 4 quick draws
a few locker, longer slings, etc...

I don't think a double set of cams is particularly necessary like it is in some areas in the US. But more gear gives you more options, you cant leave the stuff you don't need at the base of the climb.

Irrespective of this being the case, I was probably having a bad day. As M9 (i can't be arsed confirming that it was he) said shortly after my post, it's the whole "me generation" that I probably had had enough of that day, including at work.
For starters, the question about "what should my first trad rack be?" probably accounts for 33% of the posts on this forum (shortly thereafter by bolting vs not-bolting). I get bugged by it everyday at work. "What do I need to do about x-y-z". Well, if you'd bothered to read the material provided earlier in the week, you'd know, don't waste my time asking me the same question because you think you're special (you probably are, special in that retarded kinda way, I often feel like saying).
The response is generic. I guess it's a little bit like just about everything in life. "Start with the "average" of everything you need and you'll be fine, specificity can come when you're better at it."
As Neil said, sure, places like indian creek may well need 8 #3 cams to climb supercrack, but that's the excpetion, not the rule.
Anyway, it's not you, it's just that you copped it from me :-)
Enjoy your average rack! (they call me belligerent for a reason ;-) all i'm missing now is the old, old age)
