I bought the app last night and honestly, $30 to have the guidebook in your pocket and not lug a backpack up a climb is well worth it. I'm going to check out the Otterbox case too - that story was very impressive, though I think I might just find a way to sling the phone to my harness.

I would really like to have some kind of tick list/notes on a climb functionality within the app. I don't use thecrag.com or anything, I just write all over my guidebook.

Good to hear Claire,

Ticklist / notes functionality is in the pipeline, but probably not in the immediate future. I'm looking at porting to Android at the moment. Once that's done, I'll look at adding ticklist / notes stuff to both.

Port to Android!

Course that'd mean I need even more battery power for those trips away ...

We're being asked what are the 9 new topos on the Arapiles iPhone App so climbers can check them out so here goes...

New topos include:
1) In The Colosseum Area - Comic Strip Wall Right.
2) King Rat Cliffs - Catcher Wall.
3) Fang Buttress Area - Alis Start Area.
4), 5) & 6) Grotto Wall & Voodoo Gully Area - Hot Coq Wall, Argyle Street Wall and Looking Glass Lower.
7) The Pharos - Ministry Wall.
8) Pharos Gully - Voidoid South Face.
9) Northern Group - Barbed Wall.

Some of these topos give an image for routes that are mentioned in the Selected Guide but don't have an image while some are for new routes.

Again, this update is free to download for anyone who's already purchased the app.

Food for fodder but I am not writing about cainine medical solutions.

Has anyone drawn and written guide pages from the guide book and found it more reinforcing than having the book with you?

Has anyone done the same for periferal routes to ensure the hand wrote description lives up to measure.

I have done the first, which really worked by reinforcing the mind, but never the later which I regret as I think may of helped.

Kind of like you, I have done the first, but only read the surrounding climb descriptions for possible crossover (if needed) options.

I have also deliberately left the guidebook to its own, and rocked up to the cliff to simply climb whatever my eye was drawn too!

I've been working on this exact idea for a while now. There is much climbing info locked away in various silos around the Internet, so by bringing it all together and fronting with a powerful dynamic UI, it may be that static guidebooks (and other apps) will become a thing of the past..

It is very slow going, since my resources are limited, but I am documenting it as I go along. If anyone else feels this is a good idea and wants to help:

New update for the Arapiles app should be up on the app store now. It will be handy for all you hard men and women attempting to find your way to Somalia for the second ascent. It's also got a few other new routes (First Blood, In Lieu Extension etc.)

New overhead topo maps for:
-Central gully left and right
-Tiger Wall
-Pinnacle Face
-Watchtower

Also, it now supports the iPhone 5 screen size natively without letter boxing.

All for the super reasonable price of $0.
Enjoy

Just a quick reply to say thanks for the app.

It would be good if you could list new climbs and topos in the itunes update log rather than just here :-)

An ability to check a climb as done and write notes about it would be great too!

Thanks Kane,
Good call on the iTunes log. Will look into doing that for the next release whenever that is. As for ticking and note taking, it's been on my list of things to do, but real life's a bit hectic at the moment. One day maybe...
