The Canon S95 and the Panasonic LX-5 both look really nice.
I think the extra battery life of the Panasonic may just get it past the post in first place.

To be honest with either camera you're generally not shooting with flash (unless you're doing a LOT of outdoor night stuff), so there's a lot of shots with either camera. I was perfectly happy going a week without charging with one spare battery on the S95. The thing is (I'm not sure about the LX-5) the S95 battery is more sensitive than I'm used to to cold. Lithium batteries all are to some extent but the S95 is definitely worse than my 950.
I'd say go to a store and see how they feel in hand, everything else is very similar, and to be honest that's better than any amount of spec geekery.

I can only say good things about the panasonic LX- series (I have the LX-3). It's been some pretty far flung places over the 3 years I've had it and held up pretty well, although I tend not to take it with me on routes too often. A little too bulky and precious for my liking.
I usually just bring a cheapo IXUS. The wide angle on the LX-3 is great for landscapes and macros. The LX-3 doesn't have a particularly good telephoto (wildlife shots generally don't work), but they seem to have improved that with the LX-5.

A few of us have been using canon ixus - cheap on ebay or old models at bing lee or good guys. Older ones are great. I reckon they generally take better pics than my canon slr. Small enough to always have in a pocket (some models are v small and some have view finder). Remember - the camera you have with you takes better photos than the one you left at home. Size matters.

TWSS. Buying a cheapy locally is a fools game. Canon have just changed their warranty so they won't service some thigns bought overseas in Australia. In most cases it's still cheaper to buy from HK and bet that nothing will go wrong in the first 12 months.

That's what I was thinking of doing. I found the Canon S95 for $233 in HK.

FYI
A bit late to the thread, but anyway
- I bought a Panasonic, DMC-FT10 about 6 months ago...
14 megapixels, its one of those waterproof/shockproof ones, so the zoom+flash aren't amazing; really only outdoor, good light kinda camera deal - but the thing that has blown me away is the video - full HD, looks even better than the video from our Nikon (DSLR) D90!!
Got it in HK for around 300AUD, with a memory card & some other junk (i think... if you're interested I'll dig up the reciept)

I really like my Canon Ixus, Ive had it for about 3 years now and can't fault it, taken it climbing, travelling, snowboarding. The battery lasts forever and it takes a surprisingly good picture, and I'm no photographer! My friend has a digital SLR and recently borrowed my Ixus for the day as she didnt want to drag the SLR out and she commented on how good a photo it takes. The only negative is there is no timed exposure mode - but for the price its awesome.

The Canons are good but recently my gf bought a camera for her trip to the US, we did a lot of research and found the Sony HX9V to be a good camera. It's about $500 so top end of your budget but is a really good camera.
http://www.dpreview.com/products/sony/compacts/sony_dschx9v
the main benefit to this camera over the Canon s95 and G12 is the long zoom, normally cameras with heaps of zoom suffer from lens issues (barrel distortion, colour fringing etc..) however the lens on the HX9V performs extremely well dispite its zoom range.
Also, i like to visit http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/132?&p=2 to get opinions on equipment and such and found most people there be helpful.

i have the lumix ft2 and i love it. i got it for like 350 in the end. it is a 14 mega pixel and i think it takes great photos for the type of camera the only down side is the lack of zoom.
this is actually using the long exposure when caving with a different light sorce.
