ABC radio just reported that a German climber has had a 10m fall climbing in the Gramps. Anyone have anything further to add?

WIN TV news reported that the accident was on the Wall of Fools and the climber was flown to Melbourne with "serious head injuries". The news report said something abut a foot and gear, wasn't clear what what they meant, maybe foot caught in gear, who knows with news reporting.
However it sounds a serious accident and we can only hope that things are better than as reported.

Just heard a rehash of the local news so some clarifications.
The climber is reported to be a 27-yo German Tourist.
The strange comment about foot and gear was : fell 15m "when his foot protection dislodged".
No update on climber's condition

That sounds pretty dodge...but clarification is required.

Rock climber in hospital after cliff fall
A German man is being treated in a Melbourne hospital after falling down a cliff in the Grampians, in western Victoria.
Police say the 27-year-old was rock climbing with friends in the Hollow Mountain area when he fell more than 10 metres down the cliff face.
He suffered head injuries and was flown to the Alfred Hospital, where he is in a critical condition

Hearing of these incidents is bad news.
It happens too easily.
I wish the fellow a speedy recovery.
These things inevitably make us wonder whether helmets were/not involved, state of the gear clipped/not etc. In this case the Euro element not matching up with unique aussie items like carrots requiring hangers could also be a factor ...

It does not surprise me that the media would appreciate the name pun (WOF), with an accident; given their generally sensationalistic-shallow perception of our activities.

Little early to be speculating don't you think?

Did the accident not happen at the wall of fools? What makes you think they appreciated this in any way, I generally find the ABC to have high morals.
From accounts from people on scene it would appear the person suffered a depressed Occipital fracture.

when was the last time they named the wall someone was climbing at when they had an accident? its always more like "x fell off the summit of mt arapiles", not "x was climbing on tiger wall". of course they've grabbed the name because they like the (tacky) pun.

I dont really understand why you posted.
First you have a go at what others have said, accusing them of speculating (which i guess they are), however you obviously have more info due to this comment;
>From accounts from people on scene it would appear the person suffered
>a depressed Occipital fracture.
so instead of having a go why not let us all in on what you know, that way no one will be speculating.
:)

Who is speculating?
I was suggesting that this will perhaps become an inevitable outcome.
I for one would like to see it done in a professional way (eg the Australian Accident Register http://www.accidentregister.info/ ), so that we as a community can learn from it, rather than ghoul over it.
>I generally find the ABC to have high morals.
I also find them to have high journalistic integrity.
... Is the
>774 news
an ABC one?, as I did not hear it.
(I assume 774 is the radio frequency that it was on).
I was too generous* and you are probably right about them not appreciating the pun.
(*heh, heh, heh.)

Oh sorry
774 is the Melbourne local ABC radio station.
When I hear "Hollow Mountain Area" I think up the hill a bit from where the Wall of Fools is. We'll have to wait to find out which wall and which climb I guess.
Best wishes to the injured climber and thanks on behalf of all climbers to everybody involved in the rescue.

Excellent point billk, & I second that.
(Thanks also for the 774 clarification).

OK, I am speculating now; (on an earlier comment within a post).

Injured climber may have been aid climbing ?

Maybe it is time we assisted correcting this by naming new Walls to something like 'Encyclopaedia Wall'; and climb names to something like ‘Sanctuary from Society Sillyness’ or ‘Cadre of Intellectuals’!

It's fairly obvious that it was written by someone who didn't understand what they were writing about. I think it's best not to speculate on these things.

best not to speculate but it's just part of human nature.
