apparently they are 'facilitators' not 'guides' , gotta get the image right.

I'm amazed he managed to survive the night let alone get off the mountain. From what I hear the sherpas did not pronounce him dead, he was left as he had become agro and uncontrolable due to altitude sickness. The Sherpas themselves were also pretty out of it.
