No such thing as a dead thread if you ever feel the need to discuss its contents, or add to it. In fact I'd advocate it is better to have continuity of information easily found, than many threads on a same topic, where relevent info can sometimes be lost.

Sedan or wagon?

NRMA website lists make/model used car prices. Would be worth checking to see if the asking price is within acceptable range...

Saw a diff car last night when we were dropping someone off -1993 ford falcon 109,000km (i think -bit too much too drink so a little hazy) but for $4,500 no where near as pretty as the commodore but looks well looked after (ie: clean inside) the main reason i like this car though is it's reg is POM 444 how cool would that be?

Everyone last night was asking me what series of holden. I don't know. Would that make a massive difference? is there any I should avoid? It's a V6

I hate being so unbothered about cars cos I want a decent one... i look for colour and how clean the seats are I'm such a girl! x

A V6 will guzzle petrol, but is nice if you're planning on doing lots of long trips with 3+ mates and/or kids and/or loads of gear. My Corolla (small 4 cyl) was great for 2 person climbing trips - good mileage, enough space for 2 + gear to be comfortable etc. etc.

Bit slow off the mark and going up hills, but unless you're a 17yo male from a country town, that probably won't bother you.

falcon is old but if really 109 k will last for ages driven moderately will give around 10 km per litre . if well maintained will do 400 + km . dealer should be able to tell you its history . 40,000 km difference on the clock isnt worth $3000. Both cars will perform much the same as far as petrol consumption is concerned driven reasonably around 9 to 10 per litre 6 to 7 km if speedy and brakey . A better milage performance car will cost much more and over the period you own it will probably be the more expensive option. Haggle as well things in your area arent flash at the moment and not a lot of money around

My corolla is awesome! Greatest car ever-has had several 4 person climbing trips with absolutely no troubles with speed/acceleration. It has even had a 5 person trip to the snow and back(from sydney) with speeds of 160km/hour reached from one driver(17 yo male).

On a side note: the 17 yo male only got caught doing 130(all of us in the back were quite amused)

The Falcon is just outside someones house not with a dealer. and it's old.

The holden commodore methinks is a little expensive... gonna look in the paper apparently tomorrow is car day.

I'm just unsure - maybe it's better to spend a little more and get a car from the dealer in town with a 3month warrenty -Also spoke to the woman who had it before and she says it's a good car and thatthe only reason she got rid is cos she's got a new one.

Thanks as ever for help. guys. The size of it is about what i want but do you think that 7,800 drive away is too much? x

Hi Sarah, given that you are likely to be clocking a few kms and you are unlikely to be finding fellow climbers in Robinvale to share the cost of driving to Arapiles, then I would seriously consider getting a car on LPG (or getting a car converted). From what I understand some cars are slightly better for converting to LPG so if you are thinking of going down that road ask an LPG fitter whether the car you intend on buying will be suitable.

Yes good point. I believe you can save quite a bit. I've already been thinking about that.. It costs about $2500 to get that done and then you can claim $2000 back from govt. aparently. - anyone know whether this is the case or whether they are lieing to me at the garage.

I think with this in mind that the holden is too expensive as that puts it up to $10K which leaves me with minus money.

The paper with the cars in it is coming out tomorrow... I really just don't care though - I just want a car that wont break down has a thingy that will play my ipod and that preferably isn't white ( I'm not to strict on that though.) It's not much to ask is it?

I am on a bit of a time crush though as I want to go to araps 5 sept and I don't think I'm allowed to steal the work car any more partaly due to my flat mate backing out of the car port and scraping her car along both doors of the work car -and a big dent. (it was dark) - HR mangager didn't have a go at her but asked me why the work car was parked outside the house -As if it's my fault (I don't reckon he knew I was borrowing them -eek!

And secondly because... Did i mention that I hit a Kangaroo in the swish work car on the way back from Araps last time? No damage to the car - but loads of blood all splattered up the front bumper... I thought it was a cat it must have been a baby one poor thing.

I've not been very nice to roos these past few weeks as I had one (well a bit anyway) for lunch on Sunday mmmmm x

It's true. Well worth it too. I used to travel 500km for $30 in my LPG car.

I'm selling a 1991 Ford Falcon on LPG for $1000. It has ~150,000 km on the clock and Vic rego until 31 OCT. It will require some work for a roadworthy (about $1000 worth). The only problem is it's in Canberra with my ex-girlfriend. I could organise to drive it down?

It would be nice if my first car went to a fellow climber :-)

I'm very tempted by that. very tempted. Any chance of Pics?

How's it work with the roadworthy do we have to do that before it changes hands...or do I just do it in October. x

registering cars from another state is always a hassle, buying a local car is easier. Even better if it's still registerd. Getting one off the friendly local garage can make life even easier.

Had a look at carsales.com.

There is a 1998 Ford Econovan with 224000km on the clock.. It is a 5 speed manual, has air conditioning, stereo, power steering, and has been converted to run on LPG as well as unleaded.

The asking price is $6750.

It is in Mildura.

Unfortunately it is white.

I reckon it is the duck's nut's. It would be really easy to deck out the back for climbing trips, with storage and a bed platform etc. Great road tripping van.

Having consulted various sources (chockstone) I have decided that a van is not for me.

And I've bought a tent now. (erect in 3 secs)

I know but I think $7,800 a lot of money... Ahhh cars in UK sooo much cheeper.

Fair enough.

Personally, I find my van to be the best piece of climbing equipment that I own.

Mine is set up so I can be off on a road trip in a moments notice, only stopping to fuel up and visit a bottle shop. It has taken the whole planning and packing thing out of the equation.

There is no way I would go back to owning a sedan or station wagon.
