assumption made that you're talking sport climbing: shoes, harness, liquid chalk and a chalk bag full of the magic powder. if you're travelling solo you'll find partners will all have gear and local knowledge...provided you're not a loud aussie prick you'll find it pretty easy to get adopted. if you can't find partners on a given day there's a lot in the way of bouldering, boulder traverses or sea-side solos. if you're looking for replacement shoes and like la sportiva or boreal get 'em over here, vast choice and cheap in each of the home countries.
if you're planning high mountain stuff then that's a whole different ball-game.

Hi -
I am looking for some folks to climb with ideally in Verdon Gorge or maybe somewhere in Northern Italy for a couple of days in late August. Anybody happens to be there and also looking for people to climb with?

UK - all your trad gear including all your RPs, a helmet and double ropes are also extremely handy.
EU - Small rack, at least 16 'draws, 60mtr (80mtrs would be better) rope and lots of chalk :D

Update! Tickets are in our hot little hands!
Trip so far is thus-
Depart 2nd October to head to Yosemite via San Francisco for a week in the Valley (staying in Curry Village)
Overnight in San Fran getting boozy and showering etc
Then off to Paris to pick up hire car, then Fontainbleau and our gite! 3 weeks in Font (maybe a day or 2 in local sport climbing areas, and a rest weekend in Paris with a friend)
Then i fly home and back to work while the other two head to Stanage for a week of Trad Climbing and bouldering...

Once in Font I expect the urge to spend a day or two sport climbing will disappear very quickly!
Font is ace. Its the one thing I miss about living in England.

You'll probably want to check out this site then - probably the best resource for Font visitors (apart from actually being there).

Heaps of useful info - including photo's and descriptions of most of the classics...

For Font. Also expect to get spanked if your idea of bouldering only involves steep thugging like the HMC and / or if the temps are mild...
It would have to be the most technically involved bouldering location I've been to! Expect to be sandbagged by old grandpas who will walk your projects easily...
Also keep your chalkbag discretely hidden or be ready for some locals aggressively telling you off. Better to take a cloth and buy some Pof from the local Decathlon.

I would imagine it would be similar to Castle Hill...

I will vehemetly (sp?) defend the use of chalk over pof! certainly the lesser of two evils

No, get Pof. It's what works best there now (as long as you only use it there) and I found is part a very meditative sequence before getting on the problem... A gentle dab of the ball on the footfolds and rub with the tail - then a good wack with the tail. Then a light tap of the ball on both shoes, rub with the tail. Deep breath, light chalk on the hands and pull on...
