You'd have to be out of your mind to do anything drug related in Thailand...squatting in your own filth in a 6x6 foot concrete cell for the rest of my life aint my idea of a good time.

That's if you're lucky. You're more likely to be squatting in the filth of your dozen cell mates...

Hmm, being forced to wade up to your chin in a pool of human waste. Morning swim, prison style.

According to the Thai Penal Code, any person sentenced to death shall be shot to death. However,
they
all have aright to submit apetition to His Majesty the King for individual royal pardon. Prior to 1935,
beheading was the method of execution. Later, the method was changed to firing squad. Thus,at
present, firing squad is the only authorized method of execution in Thailand. It has been used for 281
executions since 1935. Effort has been made to change to lethal injection which belived to be more
humane method of execution. If the method of execution is to be changed from firing squad to lethal
injection, the Thai Penal Code will have to be amended.

NUMBER OF EXECUTION AND TYPE OF OFFENSE since 1935

Types of Offense No.
1. Offense against the Royal Family 4
2. Offense against the State 28
3. Murder 116
4. Robbery and Murder 86
5. Murder of Officer 7
6. Rape and Murder 28
7. Offense against Narcotic law 12

Hey guys, let's get this in perspective!

Thailand is a very safe and easy place to travel and people there are incredibly hospitable, including the cops. I've chatted with several cops and they were all nice guys. And, really, when you are visiting such a fantastic place, a good way to show your appreciation is to avoid breaking any laws. Beer, whisky and rice whisky (if you can stomach it) are all cheap there and might be a better option than having a smoke.

BTW: The death penalty is still on the statute books but hasn't been practiced in a long time. During the time Thaksin Shinawatra was Prime Minister there were extra-judicial killings of around 2000 methamphetamine dealers. That sorry affair is currently being investigated by the appropriate authorities.

Oh yeah, if a Thai cop says to you: "Where you go?" thats the English translation of "Bpai nai?" which is just a friendly conversation starter, not an interrogation. You can say where you are going, where you've been or whatever.

Eek!! The consequences are high for a young rapscallion inhaling over there.
My next venture might be Vienna, but I will be keeping on the straight and narrow - just beer.
Thanks for the interest in this topic. I am glad I got out okay, but I am lucky compared to some.

Just got back too, after 3 weeks. We had a great time as we expected to.
We also expected bad bolts but not as many as we saw. Routes are rebolted it is common not to chop the old ones. The newer ones apparently have redish glue so look for it! I was confused on many occasions as to what to clip and on 1 climb had 4 options but lucky I wasn't gripped at the time. On longer routes it is handy to carry a couple of extra draws in case you come across a few more bolts than expected.
Fav. areas: The Keep, Thaiwand, Eagle Wall & Tyrolean/Dums. Enjoy
