Hi guys,

Just letting you all know I've put a new trip report from a week or two ago, with even more photos!

This time a four-day solo winter hike return from Harrietville via Bungalow Spur, The Razorback and Bon Accord Spur. I managed to summit Mt Feathertop and visit the MUMC hut on a day hike, and spent 3 nights freezing my ass off snow-camping.

By the way, this was my first multi-day hike and first snow-camping experience. Can you see a theme here? ;)

I hope you enjoy and I look forward to questions and critical feedback on my adventure or my writing.

Regards,

Hayden

Another fascinating read! Brings back memories of my own winter visit to Mt Feathertop with the MUMC more than 40 years ago.

I have to say that not carrying a tent above the snow line wouldn't be my first choice. There was one night not long after Mt Feathertop that I slept out in the snow without a tent in below zero weather. I vowed the next day that it would never happen again! :-)

Looks like you had some snow and some good weather. It sounds like you missed the Hot Tub by a week or so. Apparently there was a hot tub temporarily installed outside the MUMC hut last weekend. I heard it took a few hours but it eventually reached 40C+.

Oh and I think that was my article about Passport to Insanity. Glad somebody has read it!

And despite what Parks Vic says about ''huts' being for emergency use only, MUMC hut was never built for that purpose and has has plenty of space.

Good TR. I gave up relying on inflatable pads for snow camping. Instead I used two pads. One of thin closed-cell foam that was the size of my tent floor. That went under the tent which both protected the tent floor and made the whole floor somewhat insulated. Then a standard closed cell mat to sleep on.

I also suffered badly from cold feet and ended up wearing supergators whenever I went skiing (never got into snow-walking).

Good read - couldn't believe that you had a "choofer " till you mention it was your grandfathers they were great stoves but had a tendancy to flame out (still have a couple ). MSR stove were a luxury in comparison . Spent many days up feathertop in snow but no snow shoes just plugging steps as well as going across the razorback .By the mid 70's touring skis (wax and klisters ) were available and skiing the razorback was more pleasant than plugging steps . Fantastic spot but not quite as nice since the fires

Yes the move to using two pads was the life-changing moment for snow camping for me. Both inside the tent but made all the difference.
One full-length foam + one inflatable seems to work fine.
