We're headed down to Nowra soon. How is Thompsons point in terms of safety and access with Kids? My two are 5 & 8 and pretty savvy. They're pretty good at amusing themselves with hanging out in caves, poking each other with sticks etc and the occasional bit of top roping.

We've been to the lair before and that was great, but interested in checking out some other good areas too this time.

Anything in the 18-22 range is good, as is the lower grades for the girls.

Jeremy,

My kids are a touch older but around that bracket.

I think it'll be great for you if they are reasonably savvy.

Access is easy, lots for tyhem to poke around with and play caves etc, some straightforward climbs for them to do and easy to keep an eye on them.

Limited loose shite coming down from on top as well.

Start at Descent Gully Walls and wander from there.

I've taken my kids (now 6 and 9) there plenty of times - plenty of easy exploring, short access, easy climbs, hard to get lost.

Most of old nowra is fine with kids.

Thompsons is great abit of care needs to be taken when walking down to the descent gullies form the car park with smaller kids.

Grotto very easy access.

Mortein wall has easy access. Only really a morning crag in the warmer months.

South central is good with the kids too. Not alot to do in the grade range though.

Its getting warmer so if don't want to have patchy looking kids bring something for the mozzies.

My kids first went to Nowra at about that age. Along with the above suggestions I think you'll find most of New Nowra is suitable for them too. There's access at either end of Thompsons Point that drops you down to the easier ends of the crag i.e. Descent Gully Walls and Fossil Cave Environs both have a few easier routes.

I was half way up something on the descent gully walls one day, they were a similar age to yours, when they both started screaming in agony out in the bush somewhere. I thought their Mum was going to drop me. The little cave they were playing in was home to a wasp nest. They were both stung, multiple times ,simultaneously. If you let me know when your going I can have them show your kids where not to go.

I'm sure they'll appreciate it if you camp at the ski park, canoe accross the water, swim in the water and maybe even wander through the animal park with them. You could camp at the animal park but you won't get a canoe.

I only went to to the Goldmine, but it was rap access and lots of crap rock. Almost as kid friendly as pt perp, ie, almost not at all.

My kids loved the Gold Mine. Nice fun adventure walk in (non rap) - then its all good at the crag. They are 6,8 and 10

Where's the walk? We rapped in over the big cave just in front of the car park and climbed out via a 17 at the far right (and were so trashed by then even that felt hard!).

There's some directions on thecrag, although I can't vouch for accuracy!

Alternatively, to access the base of the cliff (without rapping in) walk toward the cliff and pick up a faint trail leading to the left. After about 200m the trail leads you into a gully. Take care at the top of the gully due to loose earth and rotten rock. Trend leftward to reach the first set rungs to gain the terrace. Go right along the terrace, again take care though the sword grass and wet ground to reach the second set of rungs. Once at the base of the cliff walk right (facing out), keeping as close to the cliff as possible, for about 50m to find a fixed ladder and rope. Scale this ladder to reach Wind Willows Wall. About 10 minutes walk from car.

My 70+ year old dad got to the bottom of the Goldmine with no problems. There are some rungs and exposure but once at the base it's fine. Bundy's kids have ticked all the New Nowra crags!

We went to The Goldmine one day and got stuck in traffic behind the Croation rock climbing club. They'd brought their extended family and were lowering Grandma down a 2 metre rung climb with a rope.
