you'll eat those words come summer... :P some of the bush is incredibly dry and fuel loads are scary in some places, I'm glad I'm holding off on project fire fighting for the moment!

as an aside, kudos to those who do fight fires!

the carnage in the amphitheatre at the moment is pretty awesome. the walk up to taipan has been re-routed in several spots by monster trees which have come down. and underneath dance of life where there used to be trees there's a pile of shattered shards of wood and new clear views to the west!

And don't get your Phillips head confused with a Pozidrive, a far superior arrangement in my opinion.

Roger! I've some manufacturers are using a square drive in leau of the hex key now too. Then there is also teh torx fitings that a cycing component manufacturers are starting to use. I think more for aesthetics than technical merit though.

Not raining here anymore now. I don't even think it filled the tank. But hoepfully the grass will have gotten enough to get through until the next decent rain fall.

I am not pissed at anything today. Not yet anyway.

I was working at Stapylton the day that storm came through. It was remarkably sudden, brief and completely manic. We'd just got back to the car, having seen storm clouds around all morning on the walk but nary a drop on us, then the wind kicked in, slamming my door shut and we're sitting in the car watching horizontal hail and trees flying everywhere. Literally the better part of trees were breaking off and they were blown easily 20m through the air. There was a family having a picnic at the far table and they were running for their car as trees came down all around them. We were in the car waiting for a tree to come through the roof, but we didn't have long to wonder if there was anywhere safer we could get to as it came to an abrupt halt after a matter of minutes and we dragged the trees out of the carpark in order to get out. The whole clearing was chockers with them, as was the picnic ground. Then we had to stop and clear the road to get out another 3 times - some of the trees on WInfield Rd took 6 of us to move (another 3 cars came up behind us as 2 small women and 2 12 year olds contemplated which trees we could move). I've heard the the gully up to the summit of Stapylton looks like the wind was funnelled down it clearing out all the trees. There's a fair bit of mess around the whole area that you can see just driving around too.

Yeah I believe it's been pretty wet. I'd never seen a full rainbow before I came to Oz

I know I shouldn't let minor things piss me off on a friday arvo.......but I can't help the way I feel! This week's theme is cycling.

#1 - People who totally misunderstand bike helmets and assume that the piece of fruit box on their head has magical powers. "yeah man, I had this stack and didn't hit the road too hard but my bike helmet was busted into THREE PIECES! If I wasn't wearing it I'd be in a coma for sure"

No, actually the force required to break a piece of polystyrene is f--- all. What their helmet saved them from is a bit of split scalp and a headache. When the little cells of polystyrene are all squashed flat as pancakes, then you know you hit the road proper hard and the helmet prolly prevented serious damage.

#2 - Self righteous knobs who think its O.K. to spit orders at folk they don't know. I swear, the next c--t who yells "helmet" at me is going to have to visit the proctologist to get their own helmet back......I'm aware that I don't have a helmet on, and I'm ok with the "risk" seeing as I'm rolling down to the beach in thongs at 15k's an hour!

#3 - f---heads in Sydney who tell you off for riding on the footpath even though you're going wheelchair speed. Why do these knobs always wait till they're just past your shoulder to come out with their little quips?

#4 - Master's "athletes"
Q: What's the defenition of a master's cyclist?

A: A strategic genius who conserves their strength by hiding in the bunch.....for 15yrs!! Then, when the strong guys at the front drop their guard and have babies and mortgages, the masters cyclist strikes!

ODH - you are setting yourself up for abuse out on the road. Is it really so hard to shut
up the critics and wear a helmet, as well as ride on the road? I am disappointed that
you break the law, then come on line to whinge about the results. Yes, it is daft to have
other people to yell at you while you are cycling along, but if you want sympathy, you
can get that subjectively from a court-prescribed counsellor after your sentencing for
bowling over a pedestrian.
Your not wearing a helmet is akin to not wearing a seatbelt because your only driving
2km up to the rail station. Short distance + slow speed = what could possibly go
wrong?
Why not just store a helmet on the handlebars at home; it will always be at hand to put
on when you duck out for a spin.

I wear my helmet on the bike for a couple of reasons. 1. its the law and two the same reason I always ride my motorbike wearing leathers even mid summer is although you don't plan on having a crash (doubt anyone leaves their front door planning on having an accident) but you may only be travelling at 15km/hr but the car that hits you could be going considerably more.

Also in regards to the footpath. Even though your posts sometimes might suggest otherwise, I doubt you are 12 years old or under...

Troll score = T1 only because it got a response

I'm disapointed that the law is a shit one, civil disobediance is a reasonable response in this case. I'm not whinging about being busted by the cops, I'm whinging about stupid busybodies wanting to sign on as volunteer law enforcers.
Would you lean out the window and yell at someone for not having a seatbelt on? I agree with your maths by the way, rolling round the burbs at 40k's an hour in a car does not require a seatbelt.

The specific footpath incident which has sparked my pissedoffedness involved a european girl who had been in oz for <24hrs and was really not used to left side riding and psycho, cyclist hating sydney drivers. Given that she was scared of dying I decided that riding on the (very uncrowded) footpath was the sensible thing to do.....enter a string of c--ts who proceeded to very rudely tell us off. You'll notice that we did not "bowl over a pedestrian" as we were going really slow. Why would I be more likely hit someone while illegally riding 10k's an hour than if I were legally running 10k's an hour?

I think I'm more agile on my feet than on a bike at the speeds you're talking about. I'm intrigued as to how you sidestep on a bike.
