TSA guidlines state that we can carry 1 bag of photographic equipment as carry-on in addition to 2 bags of normal carry on.
I've been hassled by smaller operators (ie. travelling on twin otters) due to the size/weight of my camera bag but I've always been able to get it on there, but always been able to get away with it...bigger planes it's no probs. There's no way I'm putting that much camera gear under a plane to get thrown around. Sure, Pelican cases work great but I just discovered how easy it is for gear to get ripped off from baggage claim & my camera insurance doesn't cover it if I'm not physically standing with the gear (& wtf is the point of that?! I'll provide my own insurance if I'm standing right there!)
Wendy- the weight issue is more to do with OH&S for the baggage handlers.

i find that when traveling internationally the bigger bulkier items can be taken as 'hand luggage' if you stuff them up your arse before hand.

Anyone else think the 8kg (or more) is a rip-off?
Yes I've heard higher rates, but think of it this way: I can buy a nice bottle of red for say $15. That's including growing the grapes, harvesting, fermenting, bottling, marketing and distribution.
But to fly it up and back to Sydney costs me $16 (or more).

8 kg wine?
That is heavy duty gfdonc!
... Buy scotch instead. At $35 your $16 freight is comparatively cheaper!

Oops. That was $8/kg of course.
Are you suggesting Grange is a better deal than cask red on that basis?
