What's confusing me at the moment is that the composting loos are unisex and that works fine. What's the difference?

Yeah most are too skinny to need an XL harness!
Next you will be taking pics of how many fit into an Araps dunny instead of a Nowra cess spa!

I've used the womens toilets or disabled toilet. everyday over the last month for my morning dump and have yet to meet someone who felt "threatened". I've talked politics, climbing, the current state of my fingernails, plus many more pressing issues to ladies using the loo's at the same time, although maybe it's all those cup weekend wiggers who blow the issue well out of proportion.
there's enough flies here without having to worry about them infecting my number two hole in the longdrops...
The real water waste is coming from people using the loo's for a piss (that includes women) and people washing their dishes without a bucket. I was also surprised with the amount of people dumping water out of their containers at the end of their stay (mostly cup weekend) instead of giving it away.

i am not sure how recent the pictures are but as was looking at Google Maps Street View and it shows Natimuk ( i was looking at nati to see if was as much of sh......hole as i remembered) yep no change there.
But anyway you can drive down google street view towards araps ands see how dry it is. quite depressing actually. i think that nobody should be wasting water on those conditions.
have a look when you get some time

Dunno Neil - maybe on average. I've seen some 'average suburban Australians' I'd like to meet in a nudist unisex toilet at Araps.
*sigh* the last shreads of decency fall to the floor at my feet.

with some mention above of taps left running, I have always found the taps at araps not very user friendly - it's hard to get a small amount of water out from them -- either you don't push the button enough and no water, or you push it a bit too much and get way to much.
I guess the bottom line is you should wsh hands using your own water ..

That was freaky! If I lived on the main st, you'd be able to see my house ... I think these images are quite old though - there some thing I don't know what is that was built on the river at Quantong early this year that's not there on google. And the river looks like it was just after the last environmental flow, i think that was early last summer.

You're exactly the sort of trouble maker that gives this site a bad name.

I took 50 litres - had to buy a second 15L drum which cost me $12 (+$5 for a tap) at Ray's, and is re-useable.
Interestingly though a same-sized container in the supermarket costs $8.30 and comes with the water already in it, as well as a tap. Not refillable though, that extra screw-top lid costs you $9 in my reckoning. Silly economics.
We stayed until Wednesday, someone refilled in Horsham so we had water left over to donate around camp on Wednesday afternoon which was 'well' appreciated.

i used to poo in the womens toilets if the mens were all busy back in the days before the compostimg toilets. the men only had 3 shitters and the majority of the climbers were male. these days there are way more women around. i would only use them now if i had eaten some of dave j's bacon and was having some kind of emergency....

I don't mean to cause trouble, I'm just a little thick sometimes and need things explained.

I agree. Women at Araps are always throwing themselves at me whenever I walk into their toilets naked. My cries for help don't get heard.

You are right, on all counts.
I checked my street with the same tool and saw a motorcycling friend in many of the shots. She obviously happened to be following the camera car and then overtook it and later pulled into her driveway. By rotating the photo view she was easy to track pretty much the whole way.
Interestingly the resolution is such that the numberplate and facial features of pedestrians in some shots are blurred if zoomed in on. I also noted the street address number-for-location were indeed approximate; so I guess some degree of privacy is built in (by default?).

I requested they blur the number plate of my car because it was readable. I submitted a privacy request and even though I followed the directions and selected the small part of the image that was problematic there's now a big black image where the photo of my house/car were. The other side of the street is gone too and my neighbours house, everything from that 'step' up the road.

Spoke with Peter Hawker today and got the run down on the dramas. They are working on the bore again at the moment - they have water but the bore keeps silting up so they are trying to fix that but may need to abandon that bore. There is funding to drill a new one downhill (drought relief funding is apparantly providing all of this not PV) but even if either of these work, it's still not going to last long as the water reserve isn't very big. The pipeline is maybe 2 years away and water is not guaranteed from that either. Trucking in water keeps stirring up silt in the bottom of the tank and creating plumbing problems, Pete got funds to get the tank cleaned, the guy looked at it and said it would fall apart if you cleaned it so now he needs to get a new tank even to continue with carted water and his management are still bandaiding the problem 8 weeks later (which he had been warning them about for 5 years) and not supporting him in developing long term solutions. So the poor guy is generally going starkers.
The upshot of all that is bore or no bore, water problems are here to stay for a while.

One thing i noticed is most people still take bucket loads of dishes to wash up at the
taps, its not hard to wash your dishes with a little of your own water while minimizing the amount of pots you need to clean.
