My understanding is it's the "Fairy Circle" (picnic area), and only on a leash.

The no dogs at Araps is a bit of a joke. It's hardly wilderness. People used to take there dogs (and firearms, for a bit of rabbit or shooting mice for sport [slug guns] during plagues) there all the time when it was a state forest and it wasn't a problem.
Jimminy clip it !!

Slug guns , eh !!! :D

I thought they went out of fashion in the 70s ... the hock shops are full of them rusty old things !

But , yeah , slug guns at Araps , WHAT A BLAST !!!! ha ha ha !!!

Yeah, shoot all the fool-time ferals in the a#se, when they go scavaging thru the bins of a Sunday arvo :D

I thought that I'd ressurect this topic after seeing people with a dog camping and bouldering at Arapiles last week.
Despite what Snowball said just a bit earlier in this thread the "no dogs" thing is not a bit of a joke. Maybe it's a coincidence but on Saturday afteroon I wandered past the Crankshaft boulder and there was a bunch of roos happily browsing only a few metres away. Back past the same spot on Sunday afternoon past boulderers with dog - no roos. The dog was leashed but it's still not allowed.
Did I confront them? No. I've done lots of confronting over the years and this time I didn't want to ruin my afternoon.

I agree. I love dogs but they shit me at crags.

Then again, so do people.

Agree on both counts. I don't go climbing because I like hanging out with people.

But, bitterness aside, there are plenty of well documented reasons not to take dogs/cats to nature areas. A famous study in the UK which fired the bird-nerds up, indicated that the smell left over from a dog that had been walked on a leash was enough to reduce biodiversity (ie some species just pissed off for good) for months after. Lots of birds have a long memory for predators, so seeing/smelling a dog once is enough to keep them away.

Also, if I was a dog, I'd eat a Stumpy for breakfast every day.

Does anyone know how to track down a current version of this document? The link is no longer working.

The reason I ask is because I'm travelling home to my parents place via Mt Arapiles and hoping to take my dog. We're planning to camp overnight, do one climb early the next morning then be on our way. I'd obviously leave my dog tied to the car while we climb.

I'm thinking Centenary park could be the camping area just off the road to the north of the gums? I don't think it's the picnic area mentioned because the reference specifically mentions camping and there are no camping signs around that area.

I know that this will undoubtedly inflame the anti-dog lobby on this forum. But I'm not interested in people’s ethical opinions on domestic animals in "wilderness areas". I just want to know the rules. I'll deal with dalai, Wendy, etc, as amicably as possible if/when they confront me.

The sign at the gate says "No cats, no dogs, no firearms". Not much room for interpretation.

You could try the caravan park in Nati?

From page 20 of http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0017/313424/Mount-Arapiles-Tooan-State-Park-Management-Plan.pdf

Dogs.

It has been traditional for many campers and day visitors to bring dogs into the Park.

Dogs cause disturbance to wildlife. Dogs can also cause inconvenience and annoy other Park users, and
there have been numerous complaints from Mt Arapiles about uncontrolled dogs.
- Guide dogs are permitted in the Park when acting as a guide for a blind person.

All areas of the Park are set aside as areas in which dogs, other than guide dogs acting as a guide, are not permitted, except the following areas in which dogs are permitted:
- Centenary Park (part of Zone 3), except in camping areas;
- Zone 2 only in the vicinity of Centenary Park;
- on the Lookout Road and the summit car park, only if retained in vehicles.
- All dogs must be under control, on a leash, and restrained from causing annoyance, damage or
interference.

Thanks for the info ajfclark.

So from the map it looks like dogs are allowed around the Pines and the Gums but not in the actual camping sites.

I think Gru from Despicable Me has an interesting take on the situation;

Gru: Hello, Fred. FYI. Your dog has been leaving little bombs in my yard, and I do not appreciate it.
Fred McDade: Oh you know dogs... they go where they want to go.
Gru: Unless they're dead.
[laughs]
Gru: Just kidding! Oh, though it is true.

P.S. I like cats;)

Here in Spain at the mo, but couldn't help myself. Management plan is an old one and rules sometimes change before a new management plan is put together. Dogs arent allowed at Arapiles for all the reasons presented in many previous threads - predominantly conservation of wildlife/ biodiversity. Araps park notes reflect this as do signs at park. I wrote a piece a little while ago for a blog re parks you can take your dog to. Read here http://osp.com.au/?p=3224

Cheers from sunny Spain :)

You've heard of Kobe beef (神戸ビーフ) and how wonderfully flavorsome it is? Well you haven't lived until you've had Kobe Cat (神戸猫), a far less popular though equally delicious dish...;)

Bandicoot is good too, not too strong flavour, a bit like cat. Guinea pig also good. Puppy dog is like goat.

I've found Guinea Pig and Puppy to be sub-standard on the cloak front - you have to buy quite a substantial amount of raw material to end up with a cloak of sufficient size.

Sorry I got that wrong Tracey. I can't seem to find anything on Parks' new website anymore. That management plan comes up higher in google's results than the actual park page. I wish I could just navigate to a park page via a simple list of parks somewhere in that mess. Maybe I'm missing something?
