Hard Rock secrets of success

I'm going to buy a Land Rover to make me successful!

And what I should have said earlier us that the ADS in this magazine are aimed towards the type of tossers I don't like.

No - they are aimed at the sort of tosser you desperately want to be , but are in denial in relation to.

Please tell me what out of that advertisement exemplifies what rockclimbing is about? Granted there is a rope, and a guy sitting at the end of it, which is what some of my days climbing are about. What I mean is that how many of us, as keen rockclimbers, own (or envisage owning) $100k+ cars. Who out of us has a 'grampians retreat'? Who out of us saves orangutans? I don't know any rockclimber who has identified themselves with commercial and material 'success'. These attributes might appeal to those dusting off their brand new climbing gear once every few months to get EXTREME at the local climbing gym, but success to me is simpler than that, such as belaying my life partner up to the top of some pinnacle nearing dusk and looking out on the Wimmera.

Good image, that.

Interesting contradiction between the contents of The Monthly and the ads. In the good ol' days, egalitarianism was the major defining value of left wingers. However, the ads Neil quotes all seem to be playing the distinction game: shopping is the single most important thing in life and by conspicuous consumption of very expensive cars, apartments, whatever, you can show the world that you are better than them. The opposite of left-wing values IMHO.

Call it the politics of envy if you like but I'm with Pommy.

Hhhhmmmm - I'm pretty sure thats what Kim Carrigan was all about.
He certainly did a lot of 'trail-blazing' ,

I want to be an orangutan - have you seen the ape index on them!
Almost as big as DODs

I agree. I am confused! I like the contents of the mag, but the ads don't seem to relate to me directly.
Although if someone gave me a Land Rover i wouldn't complain... or even better the Maserati. I guess
the target market is left-wing rich people. Book review examples from this issue include "National
Insecurity - the Howard Governments Betrayal of Australia", "God Is Not Great - How Religion Poisons
Everything" and "The Assault on Reason by Al Gore"

They're really, really good at cross-through moves.

Who is 'them'

This has always been the' lucky country ' , yeah ?
You need to take into account ,the fact that we now have a VERY high standard of living. Perhaps with a little debt , all 'classes ' of society can now afford ,and aspire to , 'luxury' living , because it is all so stock-standard now - not just a repugnant way of life for toffee-nosed 'upper class' types - the likes of which are now quietly fading away in old age institutions .
The 21st century Australia is now a very different creature .

all takin' it too seriously IMHO it to me is a simple case of if the cap fits.

Though as BillK pointed out, Maserati's and the like seem a bit elitist to be leftist. However, we do have a growing segment of "latte lefties" who are wealthy and can pardoxcically preach socialist values...........................which is easy to do when you've "made it"

well who would classify the owners of hardrock as actual climbers? how often do you see them climbing the walls or on the rock at araps? i might be being a bit harsh here but i would only think of them as business owners involved in the area (i am happy to be corrected as i don't know them personally).
So this 'success' is only on business terms. Would be a different story if a climber was reaching the top of a route or something similar.

Bob - No paradox - rich-lefties pay shit-loads of tax which is re-distributed to the broader community.

Sabu - rockclimbing =success=bussiness

i.e they can afford to be socialist M10, whilst progressing in this world through unbridled mercantilism.

So to me the pardox is evident, i.e. they can afford to be rabidly left wing and ultruistic without altering the high degree of capitalistic trappings they are surrounded with

'left wing' isn't about everyone enjoying living in poverty . Like I said , the standard of living in Aus , now, makes it possible for everyone to be 'rich'

I don't for a minute think it is (all about poverty, there is much more to leftist ideology than that and I'm cognisant of it) but I still stand by my view

I will enjoy having this debateone day with you M10, but in all seriousness people on a rock forum may be a tad peeved if I start going hard into political dogma and diatribe.

So we'll agree to disagree and your opinion is valued and valid

Adios champ

A couple of other 'rich' climbers : Dick Smith (lefty-extrordinaire) & the late Rick White.

It's all good - this sort of 'dogma and diatribe ' helps us all focus on the antithesis

in agreeance with bob, i would have thought it would be the idea thats important: everyone on a level playing field oppinion when in reality they are happily living the high life. this type of oppinion and life style combination seems very hypocritial.

comon if there is any place to debate, it's here! go for it!
