The Lectin ?

>Is there anything up at Buffalo that would fit the bill?
There would be heaps, but to make the task more interesting I will look for something that is 12 m at Gd 10 with a crack; as the symbi-(osis)-ism / retrospectivity of it appeals to me.

... The race is on between billk, BS & M9 to see who can achieve it 1st ? unless there are other lurkers intrigued out there !!

well I'm in for that challenge M9
a 12m grade 10 with crack and loose holds.....................
I daresay photo evidence should be supplied..

I also think it's a great titel for a book
"Thorkild's Lectin" - and other climbing adventures!

>well I'm in for that challenge
I suggest if the situation arises where two (or more?) similar routes are put up as a result of this game, that the 2nd of them is named 'The Woolamai Lectern Thorkild Connection' to redress the mispelling anomally/imbalance ?

"Thorkild's Lectin" goes to honour the winners line.

... If there is a 3rd (etc) line then we shall have to think of other plays-on-word/s possibilities.

M9:
"Thorkild's Lectin" goes to honour the winners line................

so it will be judged on the finest line as opposed to FA's and name's the climb quickest?

That's not what I was thinking*, though I admit the event seems to be evolving as it goes.
>"Thorkild's Lectin" goes to honour the winners line................
Should've written winners climb, not 'line'.

Photo evidence of FA in action sounds reasonable.
Should be a pinnacle or a tor sound reasonable? (maintains the symbiosis /original connection ...)
Should be chossy (also maintains the symbiosis /original connection? ...)

FA and report the line quickest sounds reasonable to determine winner.

(*I was thinking Thorkild's name included should be honour enough for the winning FA, but also include it somehow as an honourable mention for the 2nd place getter).

>so it will be judged on the finest line
In this case the chossier the line the finer it is! (in deference to lectin being molecular glue).
----------------------------------------
Post edit;
This all assumes that the FA's of the original line put up in 1970 did indeed mean Lectern & not 'Lectin' as a mis-spelling of the former.
... who knows the Burke duo may have been molecular biologists also, or at least had a connection?
... stranger things have happened!
--------------------------------------
2nd edit;
> also think it's a great titel for a book
>"Thorkild's Lectin" - and other climbing adventures!
...aka a selective guide to choss!

Agree, Agree, Agree

so to clarify

First person to make an ascent, of a Tor or pinnacle route on rock of questionable quality, with photo evidence can then name the climb "Thorkild's Lectin"

I think we then must send all details and snaps of the winners work and other nobkle attempts. I think he would be stoked big time!!

cheers

Does anyone know if David and Harley Burke are still climbing? They might want to be involved.

Yes, but still includes your earlier summation of

If he next visits Australia, he will want to visit them ...
...between us we will have him running all over the country!
I reckon a simple upload of pic to this site should suffice.

Fair enough. Perhaps we should postpone the starting time of the event to see if they have any interest in how things are developing?, ~ and to find out if they meant Lectin or Lectern?

Are you in this prestigious event also billk? others??

Harley died many years ago and he was no molecular biologist. His son may be around but I don't think he is still climbing. If anybody knows Iain Sedgman they be able to find out some more details from him, he did a fair bit of climbing with Harley.

Thanks for the info BA.

(Sidenote: Sigh; ... that morbid element arises again. RIP Harley Burke).

Have been wandering around Mr Thorkild's links. Pretty full on stuff if you are into lectin; ... (whole 'nother world out there folks);
Google has 2,010,000 links to “lectin”
... kind of ironic that it tracked down a humble climb in Oz, as a sidepath that got us going.

Even if the Burkes were intending "lectern", "lectin" is a fabulous metaphor for this mythical climb, which might soon join the ranks of Passport to Insanity, The Seventh Pillar, Where Angels Fear to Tread, Ozymandias, Kachoong, Boogie 'til Ya Puke etc.

>Are you in this prestigious event also billk? others??

I think it should be open to anyone who is keen to climb some choss - not sure that includes me!

BTW Is there anyone out there who has actually climbed The Lectin?

Agree wholeheartedly.
The Burkes got the irony quite right (whether by design or default), but it took Mr Thorkild's (& billk's) input/s to enable me to enjoy the pun nature of it.

wozzat I hear?
... something about too much time on my hands!

Nothing morbid in finding out about the men and women who paved the way for us. Hopefully we'll get to hear some more about the Burkes and their climbing exploits.

a lectin involves the alteration of existing rocks by either excessive heat and pressure, or through the chemical action of fluids. This alteration can cause chemical changes or structural modification to the minerals making up the rock. Structural modification may involve the simple reorganization of minerals into layers or the aggregation of minerals into specific areas within the rock.

Ahh the plot thickens (sickens say some?); as we now have a third possibility.

Does this mean our pinnacle or tor must now have a dyke or other reorganised layer like ironstone etc in it?

I am very happy that I stumbled across the internet reference to "The Lectin" whether it is a misspelling or not, and I am very impressed with all the comments and suggestions.
My science friends would be very interested ´to see an unusual picture of the biggest lectin ever on my homepage "World of Lectins". Would you let me show a picture with references on my homepage?
I am looking forward to more comments and I will check the videos regularly to see more of the OZ climbing.

Naming a rock after a molecule? A short internet search reveals that there is in fact a David Burke connected to lectin. I found that he published some scientific papers on this topic about 25 years ago, but from US. Could it be the same person?
The idea of naming a rock after a molecule is not unique, Tannin is another example and there may be many more (or more misspellings). Thanks for the comments.

Hi friends; did someone come up with a picture of THE LECTIN? did someone come up with the story behind naming a rock after a biological molecule also called the glue of life?

G'day Thorkild,

Bob Saki and I have been plotting behind the scenes on fullfilling your request for a while now. It seems that personal reasons of one kind or another have conspired to prevent us having mutually compatable time off to progress the initiative.
We set it as a challenge to start with, but thought it more poetic to complete the task together.
It is not forgotten however, and when we do it we will write it up and photograph it for you.

Regards,
M9
