Chockstone Gathering

Thanks to the PM correspondent (you know who you are!), for ideas & further links. I am grateful!

~> Some more ideas for the 6th Chockstone Celebration Gathering, along the theme of putting back a little into the game we get so much pleasure from; as it need not be the biggest event going, to be a personally rewarding one.

Is anyone up for the following activities as part of the Celebration?

* track maintenance
* weed removal
* social dinners
* climbing events (mileage in a day; most points [add up the grades]; most notorious / ill-reputed climb; most use of a number 6 Camalot or 1 RP etc etc, 3 legged climbing races ~ on top ropes!)

… this does not rule out the * tree planting, * impromptu music, * etc, referred to in earlier posts …

If there is enough positive response, I shall attempt to organise with some appropriate contacts to help get it happening.

Plenty of low grade stuff there for the likes of me, though my attitude to climbing at Araps is more along the lines of ‘anything I get to climb will be good!, … let alone having tick lists’.

Since I will be there for a few days I intend to give a bit back to the climbing community, and apart from socialising (the camaraderie of the rope extends beyond the climbing), have had the offer of the use of some bags and tools to assist in cleaning up the horehound in Pharos Gully, and between there and the Pinnacle Faces, which apparently needs some attention.

Additionally there was a thread titled ‘Tribulus terrestris (aka Caltrop/3 cornered Jack)’ a little while back which indicated this weed is also a problem at Araps; though it’s season is early summer.

Not being good at knowing the habits / identifying the beasties, but still being willing to put in a couple of hours I could use some help; … is anyone else up to lending a hand to assist in bringing these nasties under control at this magical place?, ... as even half a dozen people for a couple of hours (longer if you wish!), will make a difference!
I have reliably been informed that the positions that one can get into while weeding make for a good warm down session from attempting a long tick list. This can be suitably enhanced by appropriate liquid refreshment!!

It will be extremely hard (if not impossible) to have any impact on 3 Cornered Jack at this time of year.
The plants have died, and the thorns nestled down into the emerging greenery. Better to do this 3 days
after the first summer rain (January and February).

I recommend instead you accept the challenge about to be laid down.

On the inside cover of Lou's guide there is a map. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to do
1 climb at each of the locations annotated on that map in 1 day.

This makes 40 ascents in 1 day and covers the entirety of the mount, in all its glory. Including the usual;
Central Gully, Tiger Wall, Telecom Repeater Station etc, but also including such obscure ascents as the
Golf Course, the telephone, and Basin Creek.

Accents can be either lead, top roped, seconded, soloed, or down climbed. Abseiling is not acceptable.
Routes can be any grade.

Marks will be awarded for style.

A 6 pack of Stout to the first who can prove their achievement.

Who’s with me?

That sounds fantastic but pretty hard to achieve in a day.

I reckon over a standard weekend (two days) it might be a goer.

I'm with wallwombat re Ed's challenge and it would certainly be a good way for newbies to Arapiles (like myself), to get acquainted with the place.

Being an Araps newbie I have found out from a helpful local that campfires are OK at Araps at this time of year, ... which got me to thinking that perhaps we could congregate in one specific area of the campground (suggestions anyone?), ~> to have a communal fire and save on wood by participants each contributing some. If the behind the scenes PM's are any indication, we have perhaps a dozen or so attendees at present which makes this feasible.

Fair enough.
Lost the 6 pack a while back anyway ...
... about the time I started enjoying aid climbing!

I will be 'slack jawed' if I hear you win your own prize!, and besides it is a three day weekend so wotchagunnado on the other days?

...maybe I should offer a 6 pack for the most bags of horehound weed collected on your free days?

I am going to try my best to get there (even if I have to bring the family) - I've just tried to work out the public transport logistics from Canberra, and it's a nightmare! I'm just going to take Friday off work and drive. Anyone going to be there Friday night??

Good to have the Aus/NZ/Pacific isles flavour on board. It is now going to be a truly international Gathering at a destination that is internationally renown!

>from Canberra
You may get others from up that way willing to share petrol costs to attend?

I will be.

the other two days after the slabovic challenge?

entire chockstone group simulclimb of Bard, 15m intervals. each carrying enough to have a picnic / barbeque at the top (if the last gathering i went to is any indication it shouldn't take all 3 of us long) [solists need not clip in. This combination could outdo Edward Whymper.]

aid workshop w/- M9

blindfold climbing comp (toprope)

ropeless abseils (perfectly safe because chockkies don't 'do' abseiling)

homemade music i.e. not CD, not tape, not vinyl.

cleaning up all those unsightly guano stains

getting everyone to crap into paper bags and drive to the summit and toss them off to get that yosemite feel for M9's workshop

aid counselling after M9's workshop (by M9)

big roll *of butcher's paper outside the pine dunnys to start and continue trolls on.
and a moderator to remove offensive material and recycle it as toilet paper.(*bog roll)

chockstone charades:
you get given a chockstone identity and them have to climb a pitch in what you would imagine would be their style.

and other stuff

This is the best idea I've ever heard! Count me in. I'l do Simey, as that wil just involve me wandering
arounf the Central Guly boulders in my KT26's not doing very much.

You've missed the point ed - that's the real simey. Chockstone charades is about the virtual simey

I haven't worn KT26's for years.

This sounds OK to me! though there will be more than three of us, as we celebrated over 3000 Chocky members already this year, the weather is cooler, the destination more salubrious, and it is a long weekend.

>aid workshop w/- M9
I doubt it. Not enough room for a serious wallbag chockers with aid gear on the bike, ... besides some would use it as an excuse not to attend!!
I might take a leaf out of someone who once wrote a book's style, and maybe hang around the campfire talking the talk ... , between weeding horehound sessions!
It will be much the same old same old as here on the website, as no-one is interested in retro style these days anyway?

i'll be there. body has pretty much recovered.

speaking about retro
a few classics in volleys with slings, a pocket full of stones and maybe some filed out machine nuts?
(and a small emergency rack, just in case) (so as not to spoil mr bomber's weekend)

looking forward to it.

Maybe wallwombat will demonstrate his inner tube shock limiting devices (cheap screamers), for you instead?

Good to hear you can make it rhinckle.

Challenge is out to the northerners and westerners.
Canberra has a contingent coming, ... maybe Goulburn is the most distant attendee-ship so far, ... though I heard about some blueys climbers seriously considering making the journey.

Hi All,
Since some posts in earlier threads about Arapiles looking a bit of a mess, I have been having discussions with Kezza about organizing a bit of a clean up day. I will be up this long weekend - arriving Saturday evening for a VCC trip. Since a few of you are going to be there, what's the feeling about giving up about an hour to do a bit of a cleanup, say on Sunday morning? I've sent a message to Kezza, just in case she's available as well. Rod? Anybody else...keen?

Cheers,
Tracey

Great idea Tracey.
Count me in.

Pity the VCC Chockstoners ...
~> not often a conflict of interest arises of such massive proportions!!

Maybe the two groups can share a warm'n'fuzzy campfire. Instead of stealing rival banners we can poach each others membership?
