Don't know if you've ever looked at the UK Climbing forum but they have a 'Rocktalk' forum for general climbing discussion and DTP (Down the Pub) for the non-climbing stuff. This at least allows people looking for climbing stuff to avoid all the other waffle. (Mind you, DTP can be one of the funniest places to be when it's on form!)
Cheers

For what it's worth I like this idea, kind of like an 'anything goes' type forum, but I imagine it could get really crazy given what we've seen here in the general discussion forum, today being an example. I suppose random nutters will turn up everywhere but they eventually get bored or thrown out.

No idea how difficult or time consuming it is to program another forum, though.

Adding a new forum is all of 1 minutes work, but our current 9 forums only just fit vertically on a 1024x768 screen. 1 more would mean a vertical scroll would be needed. Still if enough people like the idea, I'll add a "choss pile" forum to the end of the list. Though I hope it wouldn't serve to simply encourge flame wars. Maybe, new posts to this additional forum could be hidden from the home page? What are people's thoughts on this?

PS: We now have 6 moderators, myself included, so hopefully things will work smoother now. Big thanks to those who are giving of their time.

I don't entirely like the idea of a new forum, I don't think we need it and in some ways it might be a mistake to separate the serious stuff from the fun stuff so distinctly.

I think Hex's solution - self regulating to the one thread - has worked well, for example. Other than that, I'm not sure if an attempt to so clearly separate the two would be successful anyway – as I get the feeling that some might have a philosophical issue with super serious climbing discussions on the internet, and so there are always going to be some injecting a bit of humour. I’ve certainly got not problem with that.

The biggest problem I see is personal insults from those gutlessly hiding under aliases to do so. Not sure what you can do about that (as has been discussed before) except to say that I think many here know who at least some of these folk are, and personally, some of them might, in time, prove themselves to hypocritical and/or a lot less smart than they might like to think they are. It’s tricky though; one persons insult can easily be another’s humour. It’s Mike’s site so his guidelines should rule though.

I didn’t see Damo’s comments the other morning so can’t comment on that. Biting the hand that feeds ya’s a bit silly though eh? I’ve really enjoyed much of his humour though, so hope he’s spending his time constructively (another short story or two please Damo?). Looking forward to it.

off topic I know, but.... if damo is ever let back in, perhaps he can write trip report about his time in exile...

I agree.
Any more forums though interesting, would possibly end up corrupted by trolls!! (anyway?) ...
Self regulation and peer pressure is the way to go, vide the H-T 'enlightened' (single thread) mechanism.

You're going to get trolls whatever happens. They pop up all over the place on the UKC forum (most of them are regulars posting under "assumed" IDs.) There is no regulation on that forum either so it is dependant on the mods picking them up or the other regulars reporting it (which they are loathe to do.)

If you can get away with self-regulation (and that is dependant on the good will of regular posters) then that is the best way to go.

Any further update or are we still a cohabitant family?

Further clarification question/s.
Is there a time limit on the 'vote-off' or 'ignore' functions?
For example in my time of association with this Site I have noticed some of the earlier contributors are no longer around (have not logged in for ages). This raises 2 further questions.
1. If they no longer contribute is their vote still valid?
2. If they still 'lurk' or indeed (if active) wanted to change their mind (vote) are they able to?

If you intend to keep the thumbs down function then perhaps there ought to be a milestone (annual?) 'refresh' interval??

This thread should be in the Chockstone Feedback Forum ?

I've just checked. The ignore function is only being used by 1 member, and the remove voting has only seen 9 votes max against anyone member, which as I said, doesn't seem enough to kick someone off. It would be possible to weight votes according to the voters current post history as you mentioned, but seems overkill given the function has had little use.

Do you believe the "thumbs down" icon casts a negative perspective on the forum as a whole? Now that we have several moderators perhaps the "thumbs down" icon could be moved to a less promient postion, like into the profiles page instead?

Yep i believe so. and perhaps balance it out by putting a lil thumbs up as well.. not sure what it would do.. but..

Yes.

I agree with Rich.
Move it to the profile page or shoot it altogether !

I am not sure that any problems (to date) have required this degree of formalising an IT response to them.
Common sense on the part of the users in avoiding topics (or authors), at their discretion is all that is needed.

The moderators are doing an excellent job in the thankless task of keeping negativity and associated angst to a minimum.
I am also aware of a lot of spam being removed by moderators. Good work !

damn right Phil! (BTW your own post just above that one was a beauty too)

So Mike, Phil has almost said as much, but how about a vote for the Best Post of the Day/Week/Month? (whichever suits). Just click to vote. To avoid rigged votes each user could be limited to one vote for each post... The results could be published as a list of the "top ten posts of the month" or whatever.

Would be quite revealing IMO, and would probably encourage 'good' posts. (Either that or Hex will open a million accounts and vote himself to the top of the list all the time... :)

Now seems like a good time to review some of the options available to us to block / vote off idiots.
