I doubt it would be useful for me (list of friends function), as I utilise the statistics elements already when I feel the need. Apart from that I enjoy perusing all sections of the Forum.

I would hope the Forum could cater for ALL of us, and consequently I don't intend to use the vote function you have instigated. What I had in mind by the thumbs up system, was to counteract malicious down-voting; ie for every down vote, an up vote would balance it, ... then at the end of your trial period the 'total' could be assessed in a fully informed* manner.
__________
Retro edit for clarity:
* Informed being you would know the total 'for' votes, and also the total 'against' votes, rather than just the 'balanced' number.

'Defiantly'! (sic) NOT offering.
As a recent Thread has shown, I am quite capable of getting myself misconstrued and having to deal with the relatively lightweight consequences of that, without adding the Responsibility that goes with Moderating into the equation.
My suggestion of one of the ladies (if any are willing), is to help balance things out from a gender perspective, as sometimes us blokes don't see the damage we do for the testosterone getting in the way?

More news from over on rc.com. Tim has introduced post ratings. Around ten percent of the total number of active uses per day on a rotational basis are given 5 votes to either click the trophy or steaming turn icons. This then counts towards a karma score for users and a possible floating to the top thread. My guess is that that sort of voting system may not work as well here at chockstone as rc.com has a much larger statistical base.

What is brilliant is that the system is working as brilliantly as was predicted when the system was proposed. Note also that the results are private and only the admins can view the results. The thing is that it works to show who is a worthwhile poster and who is not. If a user garners too many turd icons their posts will it is proposed become progressively hidden and the opposite is true for the posters with a good karmic score.

So rating posts can be more effective that rating users.

Oh yes, as far as me moderating chockstone I will have to pass as well at this stage as I am looking after Qurank while Lee and Neil and co. are in gay Paree and parts around the continent. That and more and more the job of administrating rockclimbing.com is falling upon my shoulders.

Heh, Adam has demoted himself so I`m pretty much running the whole show now or at least heading the team of admins, mods and eds. I don`t think that any one person will ever control that monster of a site. Mebbe in a few months when the boys get back from their "European Vacation" I may be able to take some of the modding stuff on Mike, that is if you have not found anyone in the meantime, maybe hex will put his hand up (slap, not up there hex you deviant).

I agree with Fatboy in regards to the state of the forum content on occassion and how some of the Contributors just write nonsense. Even given this, I will probably not make use of the new functionality. As also stated by Fatboy - removing users does nothing to stop the person returning nearly immediately (note the incarnations of Piggy and Hex).

Hopefully if we just ignore them they may grow bored and troll somewhere else?

Are there more people logging onto the forum? More people perhaps in total each day, but as a percentage of total users registered to Chockstone - No.

Also just because people log in, doesn't say they a happy with some of the content either. There is still some worthwhile information / banter which they may be looking for as do I, just now unfortunately you are required to filter/skim through a lot of garbage.

Depends if your the one riding the motorbike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And no one appreciates the weekenders banging in their pegs at 2 am Saturday morning or prancing around in there down jacks pretending to be cool 'cause "hay I'm drinking at the national". (but of course your full timers because you spent a summer at the pines once on uni holidays or in between jobs)

Hey Board!!!
how r u champ. I could be found guilty of both the above accusations and my reply to you is up yours. Your comments have put me offside where as actually i'm a really nice laid back human and probably so r u This world we live in seems to involve a lot of slaggin off at people we dont even know. If youve got a problem why dont you go and chat to the person (ie: -us) be up front and sort it out rather than ripping into people on Chockstone and hiding behind a non identity. Making snide comments out of ignorance makes u a pretty small person. i once heard a story of a dood sitting in a train watching some kids going mental and Dad doing nothing about it. Weighing up his options he thought
a. i can chat to DAd and get the low down
b. I can go nuts at the kids
c. i can go nuts at the dad.
d. b and c combo

He decided to chat and found out the Dads wife, the kids mother had just died. What i'm saying is next time come over and have a yak with us. You'll find we r really nice people and might even let you have a wear of our puffy jackets if u like. If you wanna chat more email me rather than wasting other peoples time on bitterness that chockstoners really dont wanna know about.

have a tops day

=> (bump).

So Mike, How did your 'thumbs down trial' go?
Any clarification come out of it, or is it still early days yet ??

I noticed while lurking for a short time that the 'icons' don't appear ...

The highest number against any one member was 8 votes, which didn't seem enough to me to take action. So the "results" must be that people are happy enough with their co-inhabitants.

>I noticed while lurking for a short time that the 'icons' don't appear

Which icons? Looks fine to me.

If you don't log in, and just view the forum messages (like a visitor / lurker), then the 'thumbs down' icons are not there.

Figured as much (in hindsight), but found it refreshing not to have them visible just the same !
